February Parent Tech Academy: Google’s Family Link App
GCISD’s Parent Technology Academy is returning in February with a session focused on Google’s Family Link app. The free session will be held on Wednesday,February 16, at 6:30 p.m. on Webex. A representative from Google will lead this virtual session in which parents will learn about the Family Link app. The app helps your family create healthy digital habits. Whether your children are younger or in their teens, the Family Link app lets you set digital ground rules to help guide them as they learn, play, and explore online.
No registration is required, and parents can join by simply visiting www.GCISD.net/ParentTech. Shortly before the session begins, this link will direct parents directly to the Webex session. The live session will be conducted in English, with a summary of the session available in both English and Spanish after February 16.
The Parent Technology Academy is a place where parents can come to learn about current trends in social media, online websites, and tools their students use each day at school. This Academy is a place to pull back the curtain on the many apps and websites that students use on a day-to-day basis in and out of school. Past sessions have included Top Apps Parents Need to Know, Social Media and College, Understanding Google Docs, Internet Safety, Minecraft for Parents, Fortnite For Parents, Device-Free Dinners and more.

2022-2023 Course Selection:
Mrs. Brizzi and Mrs. Bouchelle will be meeting with current 6th grade students on February 16 through PE/Pre-Athletics and with current 7th grade students through Social Studies on February 18th to talk to them about course selections for the 2022-2023 school year. Course selection sheets will be shared with students on those dates and will be due back on February 28th.
8th Transition to High School:
High school counselors were at CMS one last time on February 2nd to meet with students one-on-one. At that time, the GHS/CHHS Course Requests/ Alternate Electives form was due with a parent signature. Students who were absent or did not turn in their form need to return it with a parent signature to either Mrs. Brizzi or Mrs. Bouchelle on Monday, February 7th. Students will not be scheduled for their freshman classes until the form is signed and returned.
GHS & CHHS Virtual Showcases:
Both Mustang Nation and Panther Showcase were held online this year and have already happened. If you missed the online events, you can access your future high school's Padlets here: GHS CHHS Both Padlets are full of information to help you learn about and plan for high school. Reminder- high school counselors will be back at CMS on February 2nd to meet with every 8th grader one-on-one and answer any remaining questions about course selection.

Winter Weather Situation: GCISD is monitoring this week's potential winter weather situations. Please check the District's website or social media for the latest updates.
Updating Contact Information: In order to receive urgent communication, including inclement weather closure or delay messages, please take a moment to visit Skyward Family Access and ensure your contact information is up to date.
David Zahrndt Fine Arts Festival: Fine arts programs from across GCISD will host performances as part of the inaugural David Zahrndt Fine Arts Festival. The fine arts department is also accepting donations to the Zahrndt Family Memorial.
Reporting COVID-19 Cases: To report a student or staff COVID-19 case to GCISD, please complete this form.
Remote Conferencing: Remote conferencing is available for students who are unable to attend school in-person because they are in quarantine as the result of being a close contact or isolated as a test-positive for COVID-19. Families must sign up in Skyward.
Parent Tech Academy: Google's Family Link: GCISD’s Parent Technology Academy is returning in February with a session focused on Google’s Family Link app.
COVID-19 Testing Center Consent Forms: Please remember that consent forms for the GCISD COVID-19 Testing Center are now available in Skyward.
Additional COVID-19 Information: GCISD has numerous COVID-19 resources available for the community, including information on the GCISD COVID-19 Testing Center, positive cases in GCISD, current protocols and more.
Students CHECKING OUT/LEAVING EARLY:
Reminders: Anyone picking up a student must be on the Skyward Family/Emergency List before signing out a student. Have your driver’s license with you as you will be required to provide identification at the outside intercom camera. Your student will be sent outside to you. Parents are asked to wait outside (or in their car) as the Vestibule is not an area for parents to meet their child. The vestibule is designed to be a secured area for safety measures.
Please allow plenty of time as students in Athletics or Lunch may take longer to come to Attendance quickly. Students will not be pulled from class until a parent arrives at school.
Any additional information can be found on the attendance page on the CMS website.
Thank you for working with our staff as we keep the overall safety and academics as the highest priority for our Colts.

STAAR Online
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is transitioning all state assessments to be administered online by the 2022–2023 school year. To support this change, GCISD will be administering all state assessments online this Spring and is encouraging students to visit the practice tests site released by the TEA to prepare for online testing. For upcoming testing, students will be using district issued personal devices.
The online practice tests familiarize students with the general tools, designated supports, and accessibility features that may appear in online tests. In the practice site, there are features that may be turned on and off for students with identified accommodations such as text-to-speech and spelling assistance. Organized by grade level and subject, all 2018, 2019, and 2021 STAAR released tests are also available on the online practice site . Please visit this link for instructions on how to access the practice site.
To view upcoming online STAAR testing windows and dates, please visit our website.
More specific information about student testing days will be coming soon. Please submit a help desk ticket if you are having trouble launching a test.
_____

Students Planning to Take Algebra I or Biology I Prior to 9th Grade
Please read this message if your student is planning to take Algebra I or Biology I while in middle school.
Students who successfully complete a STAAR EOC assessment prior to 9th grade must also take a corresponding subject area SAT (Algebra I only) or ACT (Algebra I and/or Biology I) while in high school. These national assessment results are included in the high school's federal participation requirements, as well as, the high school's state accountability rating calculations.
Currently, the SAT is offered at school with no charge to students once between the spring of the junior year and high school graduation. For students needing the ACT instead, a reimbursement option is planned. The funding is provided by House Bill 3 and the Texas Education Agency.
