Nicholas Lulla
Introduction
Can you believe that 90 percent of the tuna population has vanished since the 20th century. Well, it's true and the main cause for this devastating statistic is us. We are over fishing them in almost every part of the world including the USA. Fishermen also kill dolphins, seals, and more while they drag their nets of doom through the ocean. In this article you will learn about this majestic creature’s diet , body structure, and movement.
Beautiful body structure
This vertebrate has a prodigious body structure and appearance. The average Tuna is 6.5 feet and weighs about 550 pounds. However the largest Tuna was 21 feet weighing 1,600 pounds. This fish has a very bony tail allowing it to easily plow through the water. There are eight types of Tuna but the Yellow Fin and the Blue Fin are the most common. Every Tuna has a white belly and blue back for camouflage. If you look up from the bottom it looks like the sky and from the top it looks like the ocean.
Happy habitat
The first topic I will talk about is their beautiful, mysterious, and dangerous habitat. This fish lives in the Great Barrier Reef and many other places. Some of them are Japan, USA, South Korea, France, Spain, The Bahamas, Nova Scotia, Bimini, Bay of Fundy, Santa Catalina Island, and Calif. The tuna is over fished in almost all of these places, but the place where it’s over hunted the most is Japan.Their habitat is mysterious because we haven't explored a lot of it yet. It is dangerous because they have to watch out for orcas, their top predator.
Delicious Diet
This creature's diet and way it catches prey is fascinating. The Tuna swims into its food and chews it while swimming. They do this because if they stay on place they die because they can only breathe while moving. Did you know that the Tuna swims even while it’s asleep. This amazing creature eats mainly squid and other fish . The Tuna can dive up to 3,000 feet to catch or find prey!
