Breaking News: Fall Expedition a Success!
"The best showcase ever!"- 4th Grade Family Member
"Phenomenal!"- TR Principal
The 4th grade Jamestown expedition has come to a conclusion. In October, we set out to solve the following problem: Jamestown is listed as a “Historic Site at Great Risk”. How can we capture and share the voices needed to tell the complete story of Jamestown in order to preserve this important piece of our nation’s history? And on December 13, 2016, we rounded out our learning with the presentation of our learning to end all presentations.
We began by giving an in class presentation by students to walk attendees through our learning journey. Students shared all about our trip to Jamestown, the research we conducted, the writing process we endured, and the problem we faced as we ventured through our expedition.
Following our in class presentation, students presented our product, an e-book titled "Journeys to Jamestown." Our e-book was composed of chapters titled after some of the most significant events that took place in the 17th century in Jamestown. Each chapter is written by two to three students from first person point of view. Students took on the perspective of one of the three cultural groups, the Powhatans, the Europeans, or the Africans, to show that not everyone experienced Jamestown in the same way.
Finally, to end our presentations, we concluded the night with a music and drama piece and it was a sight to behold! The 4th graders performed an original piece written and composed by Ms. Tonia, the drama teacher, and Ms. Tanya, the music teacher. Our final presentation of the evening contained acting, singing, and dancing!
Our first expedition and showcase was a huge success! A special thank you to all of our family members that supported us by helping their student practice, helping students work on their writing at home, and attending our community showcase!
P.S. Below is a link to our very own e-book! Please support our students by reading through some of the chapters and sharing it with all of your friends and family members!
Winter Break Dates & Work
Here's what you need to know!
- School will be closed December 22, 2016- January 3, 2017.
- Students will return to school on January 4, 2017
On December 19, Ms. Antoinette sent home the winter break packets. The packet contains work in the reading, writing, and math disciplines and allows students to practice some of the things we did right before the end of break and prepare for some of the work students will engage in on the return from work .
In addition to the packet sent home, students may also work on any or all of the sites listed below, provided they have access to their usernames and passwords. Students created a copy of this that they can access from their Google Drive before departing for break. Students may also use any sites that you approve to help them practice skills. Please let Ms. Antoinette know if you have any trouble accessing the sites.
Math Unit 2.5: Division
Click here, here, and here for a link to some games to help your student practice their multiplication and division fact fluency!
ELA Unit: Mythology
We will use "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan as an anchor text to study the elements of Greek myths. We will also build our knowledge by discussing some famous Greek myths. Throughout the unit, students will be collecting information to create a book that includes a glossary! To assess student knowledge in this unit, students will have a choice of rewriting a myth from a different characters perspective, writing their own myth, or completing a research paper on any of the information learned.
We are very excited to begin this new unit of study!
