Success Story
Summer Tutor Encourages a Love of Reading
This summer, while students in Scottsbluff, Gordon, Gering, Bayard and North Platte received summer school programs, families in our northeastern region (Cody-Kilgore / Valentine) were offered individualized tutoring. Kate Fullerton, a retired school principal, provided in-home reading lessons. Nancy Wolff, one of the parents whose children received the tutoring, wrote a letter thanking the MEP and Kate for the opportunity her girls received,
"Kate is an excellent teacher. She has a wonderful way of making the kids love to read and want to read. My girls looked forward to each time she came. They picked up books and read them on a much more frequent basis and really seemed to enjoy reading after having Kate work with them...I am so glad this tutoring assistance was available in our area. I firmly believe this has helped my kids for the upcoming school year. Kate Fullerton is such a wonderful person. I am very thankful we were blessed with her as the tutor for our kids."

Out of School Youth Initiative
Last year, the ESU 13 MEP supported and assisted four Out of School Youth to earn a GED. This year, we are working hard to connect with more out of school youth. Our director and recruiters are collaborating with the youth, local high schools, and GED centers to help the youth set goals, and to provide the support they need to achieve their goals. In our initial meeting, we ask the youth to visualize their life in 5 years and tell their future story. From there, we help the youth identify a one year goal, a 6 month goal, a 3 month goal, a 1 month goal, and a 1 week goal. We also discuss challenges and how they will overcome them. If you know a youth who has dropped out of high school and would like to complete a GED, refer them to your local Migrant Education Recruiter. If they qualify, they can receive extra support. Our goal is to help as many youth as possible attain their GED and pursue their dreams. Our recruiters act as the youth’s cheerleader, coach and bus driver on the road to GED completion.

ESU 13 Migrant Education Program
The ESU 13 Migrant Education Program is a Title 1, Part C program under the Nebraska Department of Education. The mission of the Migrant Education Program is to ensure that migrant children fully benefit from the same free public education provided to other children. To achieve this, the MEP supports educational programs for migrant children to help reduce the educational disruptions and other problems that result from repeated moves.
