The following is a true story from a Lakeville . . . . .
. . . . second grade classroom. In order to complete his 'All About Me' poster, a boy needed his birthday, but couldn't remember it. He went to his teacher who had the information and said, "Your birthday is June 15th." The boy's eyes got big as he exclaimed, "Wow! That's the same day it was last year!"
Strategies and Tools You Can Use - Make a Reflection Wall
Making time for reflection is important for both students and practitioner. After state testing, when my room is clear of academic charting, I put up blank charts that serve as a reflection wall. Students think about the prompt and respond individually. We share triumphs and struggles. I ask for feedback to inform my instruction the following year. We take the time to discuss and celebrate. Sample prompts include: What learning goals do you have for next year? What is something your teacher could have done to make this year better? In what area do you feel you made your biggest improvements? What was most supportive?
District Wide Celebrations
Kindergarten Readiness Night at LME
Lake Marion Elementary hosted their second annual Kindergarten Readiness Night on May 21. The response from parents was extremely positive and the students were bright-eyed and eager to learn about what they will be doing next school year. Students moved through 11 different stations including but not limited to letters, numbers, shoe tying and zipper zipping, PTO-school supply boxes, Dakota County Library, and RazKids login information. Families also got to enjoy a slice of pizza and cookies too.
H2O for Life at Impact Academy
"H2O for Life provides a service-learning opportunity for schools in the United States that helps teachers and students raise awareness about the global water crisis while taking action to provide funds for a water, sanitation, and hygiene education project for a partner school in the developing world".
Impact Academy raised funds and awareness for Padrombu Primary School in Uganda and Msosa Primary School in Tanzania.
Sci-Fi and Super Hero Day at JFK
Two weeks ago in a galaxy far, far away, JFK celebrated a year of hard work by donning capes and inter-galactic spacesuits. Headed by our art teacher and resident nerd Andy Strano, the kids and staff enjoyed dressing up and meeting cos-players. The Delorean from 'Back to the Future' and the Ecto-1 from 'Ghostbusters' both made an appearance.
Lakeview Celebrates 25 years
On Wednesday evening, the Lakeview community, both past and present, came together to celebrate the fact that students, staff, and families have been walking through the doors for 25 years! The Lakeville South Marching Band welcomed guests into the school and a video was shown to highlight students and staff that have worked together as a team to make Lakeview a special place to learn.
OHE Hosts Two STEM Nights
Oak Hills hosted two STEM Nights recently. Parents and students (k-2 one night and 3rd-5th the second night) learned to explore and challenge themselves through a series of engineering stations. The activities were followed by a science presentation from The Works in addition to a number of other activities. Turnout was excellent and an educational time was had by all.
