Mr. Doyle's Message
Illinois 5Essentials Survey
We invite you to provide your feedback to our schools by completing the 11th annual Illinois State Board of Education 5Essentials Survey. This survey is administered by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. Students, teachers and parents provide their opinions related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes. The survey results are used to help guide their improvement efforts at the individual schools.
To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.
State of the District Survey
The second survey will help guide our district’s development of its next 5 year strategic plan. During the coming months, a committee of Board Members, parents, teachers, and administrators will use the information you provide to set the future direction for our district. The survey is being conducted by Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates, a third party firm that will be helping us formulate our new strategic plan.
D200 State of the District Strategic Plan Survey
We thank you in advance for your time in completing these important surveys and are appreciative of your continued support of our schools. .
Enthusiastically,
Mr. Doyle

10 Things Our Brains Need to be Healthy and Ready to Learn
Last week during our advisory sessions, students completed a self-assessment of the 10 things all brains need to be healthy and ready to learn.
We asked students to rate themselves as to how often they do these 10 things as well as one area they would like to improve. Below are the results of what improvements some of our students would like to improve on.
We would like to extend some helpful tips for families to use to help students improve in these areas. 57% of students noted that they would like parents/guardians to help them improve their habits. Be on the lookout for Healthy Falcon Habits in the upcoming Creekside Chronicles!
Please contact any one of us with questions or concerns about your child’s social, emotional, or mental health during the school year. We’ll be there for you!

7th Grade
MATH:
Students have just started a new unit on Proportional Relationships. Students will be introduced to the Constant of Proportionality and how to find that from information on tables and graphs. We will then use that information to begin writing our own equations! We will likely finish the unit in the early part of March and take a test at that time.
ADVANCED MATH:
Our newest unit is introducing students to systems of equations. Students are learning to put together all they have learned when solving multi-step equations and writing line equations to find a solution to a linear system. Students will need to find the solution by graphing, substituting, and eliminating equations. We are also just started looking at problems with no solution or infinitely many solutions. Our summative assessment should be in the beginning of March.
LITERACY:
Students will soon be starting the next unit which focuses on perception and reality. Students will begin analyzing a folk tale, comparing two poems, learning how magic tricks the brain, and will end reading a play. At the end, students will have written a thematic analysis. Ask your child what a rotary phone is!
DUAL LITERACY:.
We have started a new unit: The World Around Us. After reading and analyzing a story about a boy who emigrated to the States from Puerto Rico, the students will have to write a memoir of their lives. This will be our main assessment of this quarter.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The students have done a pretty good job analyzing primary sources to determine if the Revolutionary war could have been avoided. This month we will wrap up the Revolutionary war and then begin our journey into our nation’s governments. We will start by examining the Articles of Confederation, then we will examine the U.S Constitution and finish the year examining the Illinois Constitution. Also coming in February, Officer Lintner will be in our classes once a week to work with students on the GREAT program. GREAT is a follow up program to the DARE program from 5th grade.
DUAL SOCIAL STUDIES:
Our Students are working on a Unit on the 13 English Colonies in the Americas. We have been working on vocabulary and how the puritans and the separatist came to North America. We are building background information on the idea of Freedom of Religions and the importance of this American value created during the origins of the United States. We are also learning about geographic and civic aspects of the original colonies.
SCIENCE:
Students are starting to learn about genetics and heredity. We started practicing punnett squares this week. In the next couple weeks they will be creating their own creatures and then cross-breeding them. Can’t wait to see what their creature’s offspring will look like.
