Farewell to Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Ornato
We send a heartfelt farewell and thank you to both Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Ornato! Please see the two videos on our Claxton Families Facebook page -- one with Mr. Edwards and one with Mrs. Ornato. We encourage you to leave a comment below each video; Mr. Edwards and Mrs. Ornato will see them.
MLK Jr Day -- A Day On, Not a Day Off
This Monday, January 20, schools will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Please consider using the day to continue Dr. King's legacy of service for the benefit and enrichment of our communities. The Corporation for National and Community Service website offers resources for learning more about Dr. King's vision for our country. Additionally, the website will connect you to service opportunities for the day.
The MLK Association of Asheville has organized a rally beginning at 11:30 at Berry Temple United Methodist Church (34 College Pl, Asheville, NC 28801), followed by a march to City-County Plaza to hear speakers on justice and peace. This is a great opportunity to spend time with our neighbors in contemplation of Dr. King's work and the work still left for us to do. Wear your Claxton shirt and march with other community members!
2nd & 3rd Grade Families -- Sign Up to Help with Staff Appreciation Luncheon
Every year Claxton Families and the PTO, together, make a point to thank the staff and teachers of our school for working tirelessly to ensure Claxton’s success and that our kids have a safe environment to learn and thrive.
One way we show our appreciation is by having Staff Appreciation Luncheons provided by Claxton families. We have four luncheons scheduled over the school year and we ask each grade to help with one meal. As seasoned Claxton families, the 2nd and 3rd Grade will provide dishes for a BREAKFAST BAR on Friday, January 24th.
HOW TO SIGN UP :
Please sign up via the Google Sheet link HERE. If you have difficulties, please feel free to call / text us with what you’d like to bring.
WHAT TO DO ON JANUARY 24TH:
On the 24th, you may drop off your contribution in the car line from 7:15-8:00 AM or you may bring it to the banquet room prior to 10:00am. If you are using a crock pot, a liner is suggested to help with clean up. Thanks!
HOW TO PICK UP YOUR SERVING ITEMS:
Please tape your name and phone number on your items if you’d like them returned. The dishes will be placed in the 3rd floor PTO room to be claimed..
Thanks in advance to 2nd and 3rd Grade Families for joining in to let our Claxton Staff know how much they are appreciated!
Sarah Howell (828-817-1479) and Lindsey Kucsera (512-663-5467)
** Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
** If you have a special dish you’d like to bring, please call and we are happy to accommodate.
Volunteers Needed for Magnet School Open House!
We're looking for volunteers to help at our welcome table and to assist our student tour guides with giving tours for Open House Days on January 28-30. Do you remember visiting Claxton for a tour? You can help provide that positive experience for a new family! Think about the experiences you and your children have had at our school and the things that you'd want new families to know about what makes Claxton so great! The ACS Open House event gives prospective families the opportunity to visit the magnet schools and see classrooms in action.
Please click here to sign up as your schedule allows and help roll out the Claxton welcome mat to new families in our community!
A few things to keep in mind:
+ You are exactly who we're looking for! There's no experience required - other than your love for Claxton!
+ Our students will be the main tour guides!! Most tours are conducted by two Claxton students from the Lighthouse Team accompanied by a volunteer parent tour guide.

Chaperoning and Other Volunteering at Claxton
1) Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a supervising chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for checks to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to get yours started. https://bib.com/SecureVolunteer/Asheville-City-Schools/
2) Also, all volunteers need to attend a brief (~30min) Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so you can go ahead and check the calendar. Please see below for the next training sessions or check this year's full calendar HERE. Trainings take place in the Boardroom at Asheville City Schools' Central Office at 85 Mountain Street unless otherwise noted. No registration is required to attend the training.
