WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BECOME
“Discipline and Execution are the two pillars that bridge the gap between who you are and what you want to become”
"Discipline has to become a passion. It isn't merely a question of doing whatever is mandatory and avoiding whatever is prohibited. It involves voluntary self-denial. Discipline teaches us to operate by principle rather than desire. Leaders, while never devoid of feeling or intensity, must also harness their passions rather than being harnessed by them." – John MacArthur
Think about those two quotes above as you read.
A man named William James pondered the question of how people differ in their pursuit of goals. William James was a Harvard psychologist who had a very distinguished career and capstoned his work in an essay titled "The Energies of Man."
This essay was a recount and observance of the successes and failures of his friends and colleagues. This seems as though it is a basic concept; however, this began with a previous study that occurred 40 years prior to his essay being written.
The study was done by France Galto who was half-cousin with Charles Darwin (Not endorsing them; rather, providing context). He published a study on the origins of high achievement.
You are probably wondering where in the world I am going with this. Hang with me, William James has some great insight that coincides with the observations of France Galto. Think about the next concepts in terms of life, academia, goals, and your future.
"Compared with what we ought to be, we are only half awake. Our fires are damped, our drafts are checked. We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources. The human individual lives usually far within his limits; he possesses powers of various sorts which he habitually fails to use. He energizes below his maximum, and behaves below his optimum."
"Of course there are limits. The trees don't grow in the sky. But these outer boundaries of where we will, eventually, stop improving are simply irrelevant for the vast majority of us. The fact is that most of us are at the very beginning of our journey, so far, far away from our boundaries. Why do we assume that it is our talent, rather than our effort, that will decide where we end up in the very long run." (Duckworth, 2016)
I know that is a lot to take in, however, think about the depth of what William James is trying to assert in context with the two quotes that I began the text with. James is addressing the paradigm of discipline and execution.
How often do we go through life limiting ourselves, our dreams, our future by being energized below our maximum or behaving below our optimum. I know that life is busy with kids, work, activities, etc. But never forget that you only get one life, one mind, and one future. Edify yourself more than you entertain yourself.
I hope these thoughts challenge and motivate you this week. Lead NWA well this week!
-Dr. McDaniel

EQUIPPING THE SAINTS
As we start off the new year, we are excited about the incredible speakers and topics we have lined up for you this semester at “Equipping the Saints”. We want to personally invite you to help us kick-off “Equipping the Saints", Shiloh's partnership and ministry to parents. Please join us on Tuesday, August 30 as we will hear from guest speaker Colby Fulfer. Colby serves as a State Senator in the Arkansas State Legislature. He is also the Chief of Staff for Springdale Mayor Doug Sprouse. Colby graduated from Shiloh in 1996. He and his wife Rachel have three daughters Abigail, Faith, and Mallory who also attend Shiloh.
The book of James, written by the younger brother of Jesus, gives us practical insight into the Christian life. Some call it “The Proverbs of the New Testament”. Colby will walk us through the first few verses and explain how we can navigate through difficult seasons in life.
Dads: “Equipping the Saints” will be held in the CMR. Please enter through the SEC foyer glass doors on the north side of the building (the main gym entrance). We will have greeters waiting to direct you. Dads will meet from 6:45 am to 7:30 am.
