In Case You Missed it: Crossing Guards
Dear CCE Families:
I am writing to keep you informed about the incident from last Friday morning, 11/1, regarding a Clear Creek student who was struck by a vehicle on the way to school. Thankfully, the student is expected to make a full recovery. As you may recall, the incident occurred in a neighborhood near Clear Creek.
School Crossing Guards
The issue caused some of our parents to inquire about school crossing guards and whether the school should do more. We care about all our students and want to them to be safe when traveling to and from school.
In the City of Shawnee, the police department oversees the city’s crossing guard program. Shawnee hires the contractor that provides crossing guards. The police department has specific, well-established criteria to determine placement of those crossing guards, which is adapted from the State of Kansas Guidelines for School Crossing Guards. Because the matter of crossing guards involves stopping vehicle traffic, this is not a school decision. The police department cares deeply about student safety and will conduct a traffic study, upon request, to determine if an intersection requires a crossing guard.
In past years, some Clear Creek families created a “Walking School Bus” program as a way to help students stay safe when riding bikes or walking to/from school. Parents volunteered on a rotating basis to walk with a group of students. As a school, we will look for ways to help educate children about the rules of safely crossing intersections. You may already be familiar with Stop, Look, and Listen. Together, we can find ways to support our students and families who enjoy the convenience of a neighborhood school like Clear Creek.
Every August the school district supports the free annual Shawnee Bicycle Safety Rodeo, held in the parking lot of Mill Valley High School. This is another way we are working to support children by helping them be safe when riding bikes. If your child has not participated in that event, we encourage you to consider the event next August.
As always, please let me know what questions you have. Thank you for supporting Clear Creek.
Sincerely,
Kelley Begley McCall, Principal
