Principal's Message
On behalf of all the staff at ÉCKS, I would like to thank parents, guardians, and students for their continued support of our school. With over 500 students attending Our House, we have an incredible amount of students who make a positive difference in our lives and in our community.
Thank you to all of the students who make it their daily routine to be kind and patient with those around them. From saying good morning to a friend or teacher to sharing a snack or listening to someone who is going through a tough time, thank you for making a difference here at ÉCKS!
We would like to welcome Monsieur Florent Feulefack to École Charlie Killam School. Monsieur Feulefack is our Gr. 6 French Immersion Homeroom Teacher.
Parent-Teacher Interviews will take place on March 17th and 18th from 4:00- 7:30 each night. After consulting with our School Council and getting their feedback, each teacher will continue to conduct interviews in their homeroom.
Thanks for making our school your school.
Respectfully yours,
Stephen Hoyland

Sky Night and Student-Led Conferences
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The Grade 6 Teachers of ÉCKS would like to invite families to attend a Sky Night and Student-Led Conferences on the nights of March 17th and 18th.
Students in all classes have been learning about sky science as part of the grade 6 curriculum. We will be displaying student work, projects, and space-related media in the Commons of ÉCKS during the two nights of the up-coming Student-Led Conferences. In addition, we would like to invite families to bring their telescopes and binoculars to the school on those evenings to gaze at the stars in our sports field behind the school. Weather permitting, we will hope to find Venus, important stars, and some constellations. The stargazing will commence at 7:00 pm and finish at 8:00 pm. The displays in the Commons will proceed regardless of weather conditions.
Student-Led Conferences will also be held on these evenings from 4 pm to 7:30 pm (details will follow soon). Please bring your child with you and they will guide you through their work in their homeroom classroom. Classroom teachers will be available and rotating between their classrooms and the displays in the Commons.
To help facilitate, we are also looking for volunteers! If you have a telescope or a pair of binoculars, please come with your child and consider sharing your device and knowledge with others. If you would like to volunteer your time and expertise on one or both of the nights (7 to 8 pm), please contact your child’s homeroom teacher:

Fundraising
All music program fundraising activities go directly to offset student expenses for festivals, field trips, concert tours, and music camps. We have recently completed our second round of VIP Meats sales. Thank you to all who supported the students by purchasing products.
Next up: Look for a spaghetti dinner fundraiser coming in April, as well as a barbeque at Co-Op in May.
Please remember that the band has an ongoing arrangement with Universal Bottle Depot (3814-47 ave). Families and friends may earmark their bottle proceeds to the student by simply telling the bottle depot the student name and school. It acts as a band “savings account”. This works very well when families spread the word among friends, relatives, and neighbours!
Band Camps
The Jazz Band had a very successful camp a couple of weeks ago, working very hard on their selections and learning a lot from some of Alberta’s finest Jazz educators.
The Grade 7 band will be attending their annual Band Camp on March 18-20. Information regarding itinerary, supplies, fees, etc. will be sent out very soon. Fundraising profits will be applied to the base fee. In addition, the $75 non-refundable deposit that was to have been paid in the fall will come off the total. Students will rehearse under guest clinicians and conductor, as well as enjoy team building and recreation time at the camp.
Camrose Music Festival
The ECKS Grade 6, 7, and 8 bands, as well as the Jazz Band and a number of solos, duets, and trios, will all be performing at the annual Camrose Music Festival. This will take place the week of April 6-10. Parents are welcome to come and watch the performances. Bands will take place at the Lougheed Performing Arts Centre. Exact time and dates will be released soon.
Grade 6 Honour Band
The Grade 6 Honour Band is an annual tradition at Charlie Killam School. Students who have shown an interest and aptitude for band will be invited to participate. They will learn some new music, participate in a professional adjudication, and gain a great deal of musical experience in the process. The Provincial Band Festival takes place in Red Deer, and our band is scheduled to play on Wednesday, May 13. More information to follow.
Grade 7 and 8 Bands at Provincials
The Grade 7 Band and Grade 8 Band will both perform at the Red Deer Provincial Festival as well. The dates are Monday, May 11 (Grade 8) and Tuesday, May 12 (Grade 7). Parents are welcome to drive down to Red Deer and watch the proceedings.
Spring Concert
All ECKS performing groups will participate in their annual Spring Concert at the Lougheed Centre on Wednesday, May 27. We hope that parents will once again fill the auditorium to hear what the band program has to offer. In addition, this year will feature a guest performance by a professional brass quintet!
Grade 8 Concert Tour
The Grade 8 Band will take its annual concert tour on June 3-6. This activity-filled trip will include concerts in Banff, Radium, Fairmont, and Invermere. In addition, students will enjoy many recreational activities. Information on this trip will follow soon.
