Dear Students and Families,
I would like to welcome you all to 8th Grade English Language Arts and Social Studies at George Moses Horton Middle School. Mrs. Alfreda Alston and Mrs. Tiffany Johnson will be working together to provide a positive and productive learning environment this school year.
It is our belief that we are working together as partners in the education of your child. As partners, we should both be fully aware of your child’s progress. If you have any questions or concerns throughout the year, please feel free to contact us at any time.
In order to keep you informed, we have included our classroom expectations and important policies as well as Google Classroom codes for you to join our communication platform. You will also find information regarding our grading policy and grade-level curriculum. We hope that together we can make this school year rewarding and fulfilling.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Assignments
All assignments and weekly communication will be indicated in our Google Classroom. The class codes to join the Google Classroom are indicated below. Be sure to join the correct class that your child is scheduled for because each class may have different assignments and due dates depending on the pacing of the class. Here you will find our important weekly reminders and class assignments.
Google Classroom Codes:
Core 1 - efcmwfc
Core 2 - cd4ekws
Core 3 - iaio54e
There will be at least 12 grades earned per grading period. Student mastery may be assessed in a variety of ways to allow multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery. Students will be allowed to complete test corrections on unit assessments using an Error Analysis process that will be explained in class and shared in Google Classroom.
Late projects and graded assignments will be accepted but may not be counted for full credit after the due date unless the student was absent. Please note that students will need to complete assignments before turning them in. There have been occasions that indicated that students have turned in the assignment to Google Classroom but it was turned in incomplete or blank.
Make-up work from an absence will be due five days after the student returns from his/her absence. This should give students more than enough time to make up the work unless the student has made arrangements with me to get additional help with a particular assignment. It can be handed in earlier if complete. It is the student’s responsibility to get their makeup work when they return to school. Assignments can be collected earlier if a parent calls ahead of time to make arrangements to pick up the work at school.
Grading percentages for a student's overall grade:
Tests/major projects: 40% (minimum of 3 for the grading period)
Quizzes/Classwork Assignments: 60%
