The Beatles

A twist in music history//By: Noah Harley and Malia Matthews

Background

The Beatles had consisted of four Englishmen: George Harrison (1943-2001), John Lennon (1940-1980), Paul McCartney (1942-still living), and Ringo Starr (1940-still living). All of these men were born in Liverpool, England. They didn't know each other until around 1957 and they gradually grew the band until 1960 when they officially became The Beatles. Tis group was greatly inspired and influenced by several American rock artists such as Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. And without them, music would never be the same. This band didn't last forever, 1960-1970, but there music surely did.

Music to the Rescue

With all the bad things going on around this time the Beatles had definitely changed the attitude of people, inspiring them bringing hope and happiness through the tough times they were all going through. They symbolized "rebellious spirit" for the 1960s, causing there world wide fame in 1962 and 1964. They had many different styles of music such as, African American, Blues, Rock, and Motown. Back in that time, music used to be based mainly off of a strong beat, but they had a new type of melody to show the world, which played a huge part in there popularity. Their chords were complex , and there lyrics were different. They were imaginative and inspiring because they had so much meaning in them, so much, that had "spoke" to their audience.

Their Hits

The Beatles started off with love songs such as "Love me do" (1962) and "Please, Please Me" (1963). They also had songs about social criticism such as "Nowhere Man" (1965) and "Revolution" (1968). Some other popular songs include "Strawberry Fields Forever" (1967), "Hey, Jude" (1968), "Come Together" (1969), and "Something" (1969).
