An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organizations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

UOI Field Trip - The Maryland State House October 5
Students will be taken to The Maryland State House to tour the Maryland capital, the Governor's House and meet our local delegates. Look out for more information in the upcoming week.
What Are We Learning This Unit?
Math
- I can understand multiplication by thinking about groups of objects.
- I can use the Commutative property of multiplication. (I know that if 6 x 4 = 24, then 4 x 6 = 24.)
- I can use the Associative property of multiplication. (To figure out 3 x 5 x 2, I can multiply 3 x 5 = 15, then 15 x 2 = 30 OR multiply 5 x 2 = 10, then 3 x 10 = 30.)
- I can use what I know about multiplication and division to solve word problems.
English Language Arts -Informational Texts
- I can talk about the most important details in the information I read and how they support the main idea.
- I can describe how the steps in a set of directions is related.
- I can figure out the meanings of words and phrases in science and social studies texts.
- I can use the parts of a text that stand out to find information quickly.

Akhlaq:
- What is Charity? Students give charity throughout the unit from their class “earnings”. They learn the Hadith that no money was decreased by giving charity مانقص مال من صدقة.
Arabic:
- My responsibility toward my community: Using singular pronouns in sentences to describe their responsibility.
- Recognize the ordinal numbers from 1st to 10th.
- Recognize the Sun and Moon letters (اللام الشمسية واللام القمرية)

Islamic Studies:
- History: Story of the people of the ditch.
Art
Students will be introduced to Greek and Roman Architecture and how it influenced the American Georgian Architecture.
They will observe the main characteristics of the ancient Roman and Greek Architecture and compare it with some American landmarks and monuments, they will learn about the three main column styles developed by the ancient Greeks: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders.
Students will learn sketching skills: how to hold a pencil, its movement and pressure, and explore the elements of Space, Form, Line and Shape and the principles of Movement and Emphasis.
Students will learn watercolor techniques used for sketching, and will be introduced to shading techniques.
Targeted MSDE Standards
Creative Expression and Production: Students will demonstrate the ability to organize knowledge and ideas for expression in the production of art.
- Create images and forms from observation, memory, imagination, and feelings
- Experiment with art media, processes, and techniques to generate ideas and express personal meaning
- Manipulate art media, materials, and tools safely
- Create artworks that explore the uses of color, line, shape, texture, form, space, and selected principles of design, such as pattern, repetition, contrast, and balance to express personal meaning
PE
Students will:
- Work on building stamina and endurance through running outdoors.
- Learn how to show good sportsmanship while participating in competitive games.
- Work on strengthening their team building skills through various game and activities.
- Discuss ways to be "PRINCIPLED" in PE.
