Principal's Point
One of the greatest supports a parent can do is to talk with their children about school. But this can be hard because, as I have found with my own children they typically respond with, "fine", "ok", "I don't know", etc.
The trick is to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Move beyond "fine" and "nothing" by asking your kids to describe their world. It's also great to start the conversation with an anecdote from your own day. Try one of these conversation-starters:
- Tell me about the best part of your day.
- What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
- Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
- Tell me about what you read in class.
- Who did you play with today? What did you play?
- Do you think math [or any subject] is too easy or too hard?
- What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
- What rules are different at school than our rules at home? Do you think they're fair?
- Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?
- How did you SHINE today at school?
In a time when it is difficult to get out of work to visit, this is a great way to continue to be involved and engaged in your student's day.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mr. Lugo

Mr. Lugo's Brainbuster
Andrew Duran from Mrs. Cooper's class knew the name of our mascot is Star! Congratulations Andrew! You get to have lunch with Mr. Lugo!
A man was walking in the rain in the middle of nowhere without a coat or an umbrella. He got soaked, but not a single hair on his head was wet. How can this be?
When you know the answer to the brainbuster, write it down on a piece of paper (make sure to write your name and teacher on it too), bring it to the office, and put it in the brainbuster jar. At the end of the week, Mr. Lugo will pick one from the jar. The winner will choose lunch from any fast food restaurant and eat with Mr. Lugo!

BACK TO SCHOOL SLEEP TIPS
Here are some tips to help your child ease into his or her school-time sleep schedule and to maintain healthy sleep habits throughout the year:
- Maintain sleep schedule – Once your child's sleep schedule is established, stick with it! Don't use the weekend to "catch up on sleep."
- Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. Before bedtime, start a "quiet time" to allow your child to unwind. The routine should include relaxing activities, such as a bath and a bed-time story (for young children) or a reading time (for older children).
- Limit television, video games, and other electronic distractions before bedtime.
- Avoid big meals close to bedtime - a heavy meal may prevent your child from falling asleep.
- Avoid caffeine – sodas and other caffeinated drinks should be limited after noon, and especially at night. A good rule of thumb is to avoid any caffeine six hours before bedtime, as the caffeine can interrupt your child's natural sleep patterns, making it difficult to fall asleep.
- Maintain a peaceful bedroom environment – dark room, comfortable bed, and a room temperature that is neither too hot nor too cold. Electronic distractions like television, computers, or video games should be removed from your child's room and set up in a different location.
- Be a role model - Set a good example for your child. Establish your own regular sleep cycle and maintain a home that promotes healthy sleep.
- Required sleep – 10 to 11 hours for school children ages 5-10

Panorama Student Supports Survey
Noblesville Schools is committed to providing a great school experience for all students. To help achieve this we will use a platform called Panorama to survey students in grades 3-5 during the dates of August 30 - September 10. The survey seeks to gather input on topics like school climate and culture, emotion regulation and belonging. When students feel connected to their school environment, they are more engaged and increasingly successful in both academic and social achievements.
Although this survey is not mandatory, results will be used to determine any general trend needs of our school as a whole. In addition, input will provide valuable insights for future planning and programming. If you wish for your student to opt-out, you can submit an opt-out form. The survey is voluntary and students are welcome to choose an alternate activity (read, homework, etc.) at the time the survey is given.
If you have any questions regarding the survey, please contact our district counseling coordinator Dana Nelson at (317) 773- 3171 or dana_nelson@nobl.k12.in.us
Thank you for your support of this important opportunity to best serve students and our school community.
