Lloyd Maywood Staley

During World War 1 letters made loved ones communicated all over the world. Letters played a big role because it was the only way for them to make sure their men was alright or vise versa. For Lloyd he wrote to his wife every chance he got, he went to the army in Kansas in 1917. He writes her every moment he can get, he writes about the food is decent but doesn't look good, how he looked over the city of New York, his office space is not the best, and how his trips over seas wasn't fun as he hoped besides looking at other ships. Letters had an impact of the future by phones, giving people the opportunity to call and text without waiting for a long time.

Battle of Somme

Battle of Somme was the British v.s Germany, the British wanted to attack the Germans and destroy their machine guns posts, and German wire but the most significant was that all changed, instead the Germans slaughtered the British.

Battle of Cambrai

Battle of Cambrai was the British against Germany where the Germans wanted to steal the British tanks but it failed when the British had a well thought out attack the Germans lines and it was most significant because it was known as the well thought out plan combining tanks could be used to break the trench deadlock.

Mata Hari

Margaretha Zelle or Mata Hari born in Netherlands on 1876, she changed her name to start a new life in Paris, but she is originally from Dutch. At a young age she was spoiled by her father which made her used to the attention of men. Her father filed bankruptcy and her mother and father got a divorce. When she was 18 she got married to a Dutch officer, moved to Java and had two sons. However, the marriage didn't last very long due to it being an abusive marriage and one of her sons died. They got a divorce and she moved back to Paris to be a exotic dancer. She was very unique due to her flirtatious ways and getting around with men. She claimed that she was a Java princesses and did modern dance inspired by the East and Egypt. She had multiple relationships with powerful men like Fredrick William ( German crowned prince), wealthy French businessmen, and French military officers. Due to her being a Dutch nationality she was able to cross different nationalities like France Germany and Britain. Since the French and Germans were enemies she was already a target. Her role in the war was working as a spy for the French, but the French didn't confirm or denied it. In 1917 the French got a message from the Germans saying they got information on them by a German spy, so the French thought it was Mata but the Germans framed her. Mata was accused of spying and working for both sides which made the French firing squad shoot her in the head. Mata died in 1917.

Douglas Haig

Douglas Haig born in Scotland in 1861, was a Scottish soldier but then became a commander of the British Army on the Western Front during the last years of Wold War One. He was incharge of the British Army going against the Germans in the Battle of Somme. His role in WW1 was to break the deadlock of the Western Front. Since in past battles him and his soldiers were praised by others on the way they fought, but with so many volunteers to join the army all his crew were changed to civilians. In 1916 the Germans attacked the French in the battle of Verdun making the French being pushed to the limit, so instead the British fought the Germans since the French and Britain were allies. Douglas plan was to bombard the Germans to weaken there defense, unfortunately the British suffered 60,00 soldiers due to machine guns, but both sides lost a lot of soldiers. The impact Douglas had was he made a statement talking about how the nation needs to be prepared of how many deaths come out of war because all victories come with a sacrife which made him unique. Due to his statement the allies joined forces to weaken the German Army leaving the Germans to surrender. Douglas died in 1928.

Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson born in Virginia on 1856, was the principle of Princeton University and was really into politics. That's when he ran for Governor in 1910, then was nominated as a democratic. His father was with the confederacy and defended slavery. When Woodrow became the 28th president in 1913 he didn't follow his fathers foot steps and started segregation which disappointed a lot of Africans. His role in the war was to keep America from going into war but that all changed when Germany had unrestricted submarine warfare, which caused the sinking of the Lusitania leading to American casualties. Then Germany was going to help Mexico gain its territory back, so that's when Woodrow couldn't take it anymore and wanted to fight back. He had an impact on the war and others by being persuasive and having congress on his side ready to fight. That's when American troops battled against Germany in 1918 and they surrendered. Woodrow Wilsion died in 1924

Edith Cavell

Edith Cavell was born in Norwhich (1865) and was a religious girl. She became a nurse in London and then became a teacher in a nursing school in Brussels. Her temporary job was to work with Florence Nightingale in the Crimean War, it was very crucial for nurses to be there since the war got ugly real quick. When WW1 started in 1914 Edith was currently in England but moved to Belgium to work back at her hospital which was later taken over by Red Cross. Later on, Germany invaded Beligium and Brussels was under the strict control of Germany's military rule. During the war a lot of British soldiers were captured and injured, going against the rules, her role was to be a nurse to help people in need, so she took them to safe houses and healed them, due to her kindness the British soldiers escaped. One of the German Soldiers found out and she was arrested, she wasn't ashamed of what she did and didn't defend herself. She was later found guilty of treason and was shot in the head by a German officer. Edith Cavell was unique because she was loyal and she did her job. She enjoyed England which made her have a soft spot for them, she didn't pick sides because she still healed the allied and the Germans. She made this statement "patriotism is not enough, I must have no hatred or bitterness to anyone". For her, it wasn't about the money she just cared and her bravery got published by the British and the American media leaving a bad reputation for the Germans noticed for injustice. Edith Cavell died in 1915.

HOW DID WORLD WAR 1 START

Militarism was used to create arms race it's like a competition between nations.

Alliances were used for another country to help people fight.

Imperialism was used to take over other countries like Africa and Asia and their regions.

Nationalism was used to create a country leading to rivalries and tension of European powers.

Assassination contributed because when they killed Archduke Ferdinand it set how alliances got started.
