Eastlake Middle School 9.10.18
The first six-week progress reports are here. Make sure you check with your students on Monday about their progress and contact teachers/counselors with any concerns. It's been a very busy two weeks. I am proud of the students and staff. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns and/or comments about the following items:
A. Carne with Cooke! Please join us for a unique meeting with the principal. Instead of meeting at the usual time of 8:30 AM in the library, we will meet at 6:00 that day at Lolita's for a fundraiser with the PTSO and a time for us to discuss your concerns as well. Join us for this great evening starting at 5:00 PM with Carne with Cooke starting at 6:00 PM.
B. Stu Hedley -- Pearl Harbor Survivor. 8th grade parents, please consider attending this great event.
From Mrs. Rose:
Dear Parents/Guardians of 8th grade Tritons:
On Monday, September 10 and Tuesday, September 11, WWII veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor, Mr. Stu Hedley, will be visiting EastLake Middle School to speak to our 8th graders on his experience at Pearl Harbor. Your student will attend his presentation through his/her English class. We would like to extend the invitation for you to attend to see Mr. Hedley. He will be speaking in the Pavilion on both days from 9:25-10:09am, 11:30-12:12pm, and 2:30-3:15pm. Please be sure to check in at the front office.
C. Parent Handbook. In case you have not seen this handbook, I am reminding you that it is on our website. Or you can click on this LINK. We should have the Spanish version up shortly. Students will be asked to sign an acknowledgement of the expectations next week as I decided that I need to speak to the students more about my expectations.
D. FUNDRAISER! We raised $10,000! Awesome job parents and guardians. We are going to recognize our students shortly! Also, we will have a lottery for extra tickets for promotion coming up for all classes and the specifically for the winning class with an additional chance to win reserved parking!!
E. ELAC Meeting. Come joining our English Learner Advisory Committee on 9.11 at 9:30 AM in the library.
F. Military Parents: Meeting this 9.11 at 8:30 AM in the library.
G. Math Passthrough and Credit Recovery. In the next two weeks, students who are failing at math or are credit deficient will be contacted about opportunities to improve on their grades or recover credits. Please make sure you are aware of the expectations for promotion. Please contact your child's counselor if you have any questions. For math, students who are behind will be expected to go to a special advisory class to improve their grades. Credit Recovery will be offered after school and there are only limited opportunities available.
H. ELM's 8th Annual Luau. Please Join us this Friday for our annual Luau from 4-7 in the Pavilion area! There will be plenty of food vendors from the community, clubs will be selling goodies, a number of students will be performing, and we will have a professional Polynesian performance to round out the evening. It is the perfect event for the Triton Family!
Thanks for allowing me to check-in. We will have a more updated version of Triton Times in the next week or two.
Follow us on Twitter @EastLakeTritons!
As always, Go Tritons!
Please take the time to recognize our great staff. I will share your kind note as well as a small token of appreciation. Our staff loves good news!
Do you have concerns that you would like to share with the administration team? Please let us know.

Triton Trait of the Month (Growth Mindset)
For the month of September, we will be focusing on Growth Mindset. Don't worry, Kindness Mondays will continue all year long (If you have a kindness challenge, be sure to forward it to Mrs. Rose and the TNT crew).
Students with a growth mindset tend to see struggle as a natural part of getting better at something. When they encounter something they can’t yet do, they increase their effort, try new strategies, and end up learning more. Research shows that a growth mindset predicts increased academic achievement and can help narrow achievement gaps.Though students with growth mindset view challenge as an important part of learning, it doesn’t mean that students “just need to put their heads down and work harder.” Instead, students with a growth mindset see many ways to grow their abilities. They can recognize when they need help, and seek out new strategies.
Consider viewing the following 5 minute YouTube video that your child will be watching.

A Message from our Assistant Principals!
Dr. Shannon Chamberlin and Mendel Nafarrete
We have had a great first six-weeks. Please check in with us or your child's counselor if you have any concerns about grades. We do have tutorials with ELH students every Wednesday and Thursday in the library from 3:20 to 4:20 if your child needs extra assistance.
Please be aware that we will be utilizing an app called P3 so that students may report directly to the police station any concerns about possible violence, bullying or other areas of concern. It's an anonymous program.
