Hispanic Heritage Month Ideas
Let's Get Celebrating!
First Question: What is Hispanic Heritage Month?
Hispanic Heritage Month takes place annually in the United States from September 15th to October 15th. This month-long observation is about “celebrating the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America,” according to the official government website.
Beginning in 1968, it was originally recognized as “National Hispanic Heritage Week” before being extended to a month-long observation in 1988.
The month also coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Spanish-speaking countries, including Costa Rica, Guatemala, Chile, and Mexico.
Many schools and teachers agree it’s important to teach children of all ages about Hispanic Heritage Month. Doing so helps children learn about and celebrate different cultures. It also helps them to understand that it’s important to respect and appreciate the uniqueness of others.
