Administration's Corner!
Hello Panther Families,
The end of the 1st semester is near, there are 4 weeks left! I can’t believe how quickly time has gone by. This semester has had its ups and downs, but you’ve made it through by showing perseverance and dedication. Your teachers and I know it hasn’t been easy. We appreciate your effort, phone calls and emails. When we hear from our students, it brings us joy knowing you want to do your absolute BEST! Please do not stop contacting us for help and guidance. Next week, November 23-27 is Thanksgiving Break. There’s no school the entire week. Take this time to relax and rejuvenate. Stay safe and continue to practice physical distancing and wear your mask. Take care!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nakano

Dear Waite Middle School Family,
You made it! It is amazing that we are already in November and the Thanksgiving break is already upon us.....The first part of the 2020-2021 year has gone by quickly!!!!
As we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful, I want to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you: We are thankful for our students who are every day ready to learn – they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here. We are thankful for the support of their parents in creating an outstanding partnership for our students. We are thankful for our awesome teachers, counselors, support staff, para-educators, AVID tutors, office staff, supervision aides, and ALL Waite Staff who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart. In these most difficult and challenging times, we see dedicated and tireless individuals going above and beyond to make sure that great things happen in our school during Distance Learning. They do make a difference, and our students, in their own individual ways, benefit from those efforts.
Most importantly, we are thankful for the parents that have kept the faith in us. They continue to work hard and advocate to be a partner in their children’s education. For this, we are ever so thankful.
I would like to wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday!
Best Regards,
Jenny Amaya, Assistant Principal

AVID's Corner
Waite Middle School, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national college readiness system with a student-centered approach. AVID begins by identifying a cohort of students in the academic middle from groups traditionally underrepresented on college campuses who have great academic potential. These are often students who will be the first in their families to attend college. AVID delivers a demanding college-preparatory curriculum and facilitates student involvement in extracurricular activities. The goal of AVID is for students to enroll and be successful in rigorous four-year post-secondary institutions and become educated and responsible leaders.
In order for students to be selected as part of their AVID cohort, they experience a rigorous selection process, which includes an application, teacher recommendations, and an interview. The AVID elective is a class that meets as often as core subjects like English or math, within the regular school day. The AVID elective consists of several different elements, making students more successful in all their classes. The class is divided into curriculum days, tutorial days and motivational activity days, which include college and career activities, guest speakers from area colleges and local professionals and field trips to local colleges and universities. AVID motivates students and provides the skills and confidence to reach their goals.

Our MSW Intern and Wellness Specialist have created small groups that will focus on growth mindset, healthy coping skills, and support for newcomer students. Students who are eligible to participate in these groups will be invited using our district Panorama SEL data.
Distance Learning Engagement Support
To support students struggling with distance learning engagement our CWA intern will invite students to an attendance group that will focus on both social-emotional skills and attendance.
Academic Support
Our school counselors are messaging students through Schoology to encourage, provide resources, and monitor their progress.
