Keeping us connected during the COVID-19 school closure
Return of Student Items- Tuesday May 26, 2020
Dear Trumbauersville Families,
We are contacting you to inform you of our process for reuniting students with their personal belongings that are still in the school. The Department of Health has issued “essential worker” status to school employees for the purpose of returning students’ personal items, so we are now able to enter our schools. To ensure these items are returned to you in a safe and organized manner, teachers and staff will be packaging students’ items (including their final report card) and families will come to school to collect them via a “contactless” pick up format. Please note, we will be adhering to all social distancing regulations. Student medications left in the health room will be added to the students’ packages by the school nurse.
Pick up times will be on May 26th, during the listed times below. To ease traffic flow, please enter only from the traffic light end of Woodview. There are two pick-up areas based on students’ last names (A-M and N-Z). For families with multiple students, please come during the time slot for your oldest child and all of your family’s bags will be together at that time. Enter via the car rider loop with your car tag displaying your student’s last name (or a piece of paper with your last name displayed) and follow the signs. All bags for that grade level will be organized alphabetically outside of the school. We are requesting when you arrive in the drop off circle, that you wait for the car in front of you to leave before you collect your items. Proceed to the student item drop of location, if needed. Please exit onto Woodview with right turns only.
Please stay in your vehicle and wait in line. Please also be patient as we will work as quickly as possible to maintain an efficient process.

Note #1: If you have the car rider pick-up tag, please display that on your rear-view mirror for ease of identification. If you do not have that tag, please make one by writing your own and displaying that on the dashboard as you arrive.
Note #2: Your child does not have to be in the car to pick up materials and you can have other people pick up materials for your child. The person picking up the materials must have your child’s name and grade level. If you know that you are picking a friend’s materials up for them in advance, email Mrs. Haslett (ehaslett@qcsd.org), and those items will be gathered in advance to speed up the process.
Note #3: For families who have students in multiple grades, please come during the time established for your oldest child. We will gather families by the oldest child.
Note #4: We will be collecting only a limited number of materials from our 5th graders and students who are leaving QCSD. We cannot accept any other items. Please deposit these materials at the assigned location in the vehicle line on May 26th.
Items being collected include:
School-owned band instruments
Trumbauersville Library books
Class novels that went home with the students on March 13.
Technology devices - ONLY for students who are leaving QCSD.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and we look forward to seeing you, from a distance of course! Any questions please feel free to reach out to the school office at ehaslett@qcsd.org
Sincerely,

From the Counseling Office:
I'm hoping for all of you, that although our current situation may be stressful and difficult at times, that you are able to find something positive in the discomfort and spend a little extra time celebrating those positives with your family. Please see below for some examples of fun family activities including BINGO games and a Quarantine "Bucket List" that may give you some new ideas for how to spend some extra time together, and how to take care of your selves.
As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. Be well and stay positive!

Health topic of the week: Vaccines
Moving forward, along with current mitigation strategies, vaccination will eventually play an important role in curtailing the spread of COVID-19. However, because this is a new virus, we currently do not have a vaccine to protect us against it. Many scientists and corporations are working feverishly on vaccine development. However, the estimates are that the shortest timeframe for having an effective and safe vaccine might be sometime next year!
For parents that are interested in learning more, Johns Hopkins has a 15-minute podcast on COVID-19 vaccine. They review its development, expected concerns as with any new vaccine, and the impact on children’s normal vaccine schedules.

Some children are seemingly overly curious about COVID-19. It might help us, and them, to learn about how vaccines can help our bodies fight off unwanted “invaders.” I have added two animated video links (below) that are both educational and fun to watch. The videos are interesting for adults to view as well! I enjoyed watching them.
Here’s a four-minute video on how vaccines work:

Finally, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) created some challenging online games that make learning about science fun and engaging for people of all ages:
Kahoot! — The Vaccine Makers Project (VMP), the classroom program of the Vaccine Education Center participates in this popular online trivia platform. Each short set of questions includes multiple choice answers and question time limits. The VMP currently offers 14 categories that cover topics related to infectious diseases, vaccines and viruses.
Just the Vax — Select from one of four categories, including Vaccines, Vaccines Safety, Vaccines-preventable Diseases, and Famous People & Historical Figures, to play a round of this multiple-choice trivia game. Each round presents 10 randomly selected questions in the chosen category and keeps track of your score, so you can see how you did as compared with others who played that category. Try all four categories, and have fun!
Vax Pack Hero — Designed for young children, players of this online game “meet” vaccine heroes who help them beat the germs. Other program elements include trading cards and online information about the heroes and the germs. If players win enough rounds, they get a code to submit for a prize.
