Arbor Day April 27, 2018: Support the Social Studies Standards and Informational Reading Standards with a Celebration!

The web site below provides information about J. Sterling Morton and his work to establish the celebration of Arbor Day. It provides free printable resources, ideas and materials for planning an event, as well as, several other free resources to create and inspire community service. This historical account is an excellent example of human systems and human interactions with their environment in a positive way. The materials are also an excellent springboard for discussions about civic participation and the process required to have a positive influence in our communities. Scottwood Celebrates America's Diversity!

Scottwood Elementary children celebrated their heritage with a community event that showcased the many countries and cultures the community members hale from. The celebration included music, presentations by students, flags, dress and food from all over the world! As one young student announced when she saw the map and poster created by an intermediate student, "Hey that's my country! I love learning like this! Can we do it every day?" With parents and family members participating, it was truly a community celebration of the acceptance and pride of diversity that is America.

Remember to let us know about your event! We would love to attend or showcase your school with pictures and news about the event.
