Friendly Reminders
- With the fireworks that are sure to come this first week of July, please be considerate of your neighbors by enjoying them at reasonable hours, cleaning up any debris that is left by the fireworks, and being safe!
- As cars are going around the neighborhood, be aware of them if you're enjoying the holidays in or near the streets.
- On another safety note, cars should be parked in driveways at night instead of on the street. It can be difficult to see walkers, runners, kids, or other cars when going around corners with parked cars that block the view.
- It's hot out there! If you let your animal go outside to do what they need to do, make sure to bring them back in when they're ready. A good signal is barking. That's your dog's way of saying, "Hey! I'm ready to come back inside."

- Have you sent in your ballot yet? We need 107 to make changes to the convent. As of now, we have 30 yes and 3 No. Please ask a neighbor for a ballot and send yours if you have not done so already. You can get the ballot here and email, fax, or mail it to Deb Bair.

Beat the Heat!
It's hot outside! Here are some tips to help you keep cool and safe during the Lowcountry summer.
- Block the sun. Closing curtains and blinds can reduce the amount of heat that passes into your home by as much as 45 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
- Check your AC filters to make sure they're clean so you're getting optimal air at an optimal price
- Turn on the vent in the bathroom. When taking a shower, be sure to use the vent fan: It helps sticky moisture escape.
- Shuck your shoes. As the sweat on your feet evaporates, it cools the skin and the blood in your feet. Blood vessels then whisk that blood to other parts of the body, so "you're getting a greater sensation of coolness," says Donald R. Bohay, M.D., a member of the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society.
- Swig often. To replace the moisture that you lose as you perspire, be sure to drink. As you lose water to dehydration, your body temperature rises, so replacing fluids is essential to keeping cool. Avoid beverages that contain alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar, which are dehydrating. "Also opt for hydrating foods," says Deena Kastor, a marathon runner and an Olympic bronze medalist. "Try a smoothie for lunch, and add more fruits and vegetables to all your meals. Watermelon has the greatest water content of any food out there."
- Install a programmable thermostat and save up to 20% on your bill
- Use a fan! A fan, which costs two to five cents per hour to operate, will make a room feel 4 to 6 degrees cooler. Also, a fan works well in tandem with an air conditioner because the dehumidifying action of the air conditioner provides drier air that the fan can then move around.
- If you're going to be outside, make sure to put on sunscreen in advance! It takes 30 minutes before it starts working, and it needs to be reapplied when you get wet from sweat or pool/ocean water.
