Attea Flyers
School Newsletter for Parents
Week of November 8
Hello, Attea families.
Incredibly, this upcoming week is the last one of Trimester 1. Some people may feel that this first marking period passed very quickly, while others may feel that it moved incredibly slowly. Regardless, our aim is always to end up in a better place than when we started, and the end of a marking period provides a convenient opportunity for parents to talk to their children about how things went. And there are lots of things to ask about. Have students progressed academically in terms of their skills and academic habits of success? Have they grown socially by meeting new people and trying new things? Have they developed grit and perseverance by overcoming obstacles? Have they developed a sense of belonging to the school community, helping to make Attea a welcoming place for all? Have they identified their own goals and developed strategies to pursue them?
Wherever students are on their learning and developmental journey, we'll continue striving to help all of them experience success.

Veterans Days Recognitions: School is in session for next Thursday's national Veterans Day Holiday, and we will remind students of the significance of the holiday and the gratitude and honor owed to our veterans. Additionally, next Wednesday is a special recognition of the Korean War Veterans Day, a commemorative holiday in Illinois.
"Guitars for Vets" is a charitable effort being sponsored by Attea's Student Council. It involves selling tickets to enter a raffle for the opportunity to throw a pie at a staff member. Some messy but kind-hearted fun as all of the proceeds go to supporting the Guitars for Vets initiative.
Have a safe and happy weekend. Go Flyers!!

"Why does morning drop-off seem so difficult this year?"
A number of parents may be asking this question about morning drop-off.
A big part of the answer is that the drop-off process is particularly challenging due to pandemic limitations. Not only are more students being driven to school in order to avoid riding the bus, but we are not able to implement a "rolling" access process that enables students to enter the building anytime between 7-8am. Instead, all drop-offs are coming to the building around 8am. This extra high volume makes an already complex process that much messier.
We're going to think about some creative solutions to help increase the flow while preserving safety. In the meantime, allowing for a little extra time might be wise, and an extra measure of patience by all adults will be helpful.
Shield Testing Update
Please also note that Shield testing remains a voluntary process for students, and we are relying on students to participate according to their parents' wishes. We will be doing our best to monitor students' participation and reconcile it with our list of eligible students. We'll notify parents if a student appears to be eligible for weekly Shield testing but for one reason or another is not participating.
Order Your 21-22 Yearbook
Please remember that the school yearbook is an optional purchase. Students will only receive a yearbook if one is ordered and purchased. If you would like to make sure that your child gets a yearbook, please be sure to order one as soon as possible. The yearbook is $23, and payment can be made through e~Funds, or by sending cash or a check to the main office. If you're not sure if you ordered a yearbook already, parents can find the information in PowerSchool in the Fees section.
MAP Skill Profile: Word Recognition, Structure, and Vocabulary
NWEA (the people behind MAP tests) define Word Recognition, Structure, and Vocabulary this way: "Students can decode words, recognize common words, understand word relationships and structures, and can use context cues to decipher word meaning." The link below shows examples of skills and the score ranges related to the questions students might be asked. We want students and parents to be aware of the specific skills being measured so that students can direct their efforts and energy to areas where the most amount of growth is needed and can be realized.
