Principal's Corner
Can you think of a teacher that made a difference in your life? I would guess most of us can and I would venture to also bet that when you reflect on your experiences with that teacher you are drawn to how that incredible individual made you feel. Maybe that teacher believed in you more than anyone had before, trusted you with incredible responsibility, inspired you to do something you weren’t sure you could accomplish, or cared and loved for you during an incredibly challenging time. Whatever the reason you remember that teacher I am sure they have had a lasting impact on who you are today.
At Discovery, we have an incredible, caring, and dedicated staff that go above and beyond each day to make a lasting impact on our student’s lives. I also know that many of our students have had incredible experiences with multiple teachers. However, it is truly my honor and pleasure to announce, Mrs. Suzanne Creech, as Discovery’s 1st nominee for Washington Post’s Teacher of the Year Award! Mrs. Creech consistently creates an environment where her students and families experience her true greatness. Nominees for this distinguished award must be full-time teachers in grades pre-kindergarten through 12 for Loudoun County Public Schools, have a minimum of 5 years teaching experience, and genuinely display the following criteria:
- Instill in students a desire to learn and achieve
- Understand the individual needs of students, encourage their talents, and foster their self-esteem.
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of their subject matter
- Foster cooperative relationships with colleagues and community
- Demonstrated outstanding leadership
- Maintain their teaching position through 2019-2020
- Commit to fostering deeper learning through empowering all students to make meaningful contributions to the world
Mrs. Creech is an integral part of our staff. She has worked with hundreds of our students and helped cultivate a passion and love for learning for many along the way. A Discovery parent says it best, ‘She (Mrs. Creech) is that teacher that you wish you had growing up. Or that reminds you of your favorite teacher. For me, 3 of my children have thrived under her teaching. Her impact is immeasurable. Her strong acts of kindness, gentle guidance and enthusiasm for learning are shaping so many children. I know that my children are forever positively impacted by her!’ We couldn’t agree more with that statement. Mrs. Creech’s impact often lasts for years with her students. Just recently, Mrs. Creech reported that she was invited to a high school graduation ceremony for a student that she had while teaching 1st grade at another local school. Mrs. Creech truly has a genuine gift to connect with her students. “Even though they are no longer in her class, my children still visit her regularly to give her hugs and fill her in on how they are doing. We still talk about the lessons that she taught in our home. She has really left an impact on our family and we couldn't have asked for a better kindergarten teacher…’ As you can see from several former parents, Mrs. Creech has had a positive influence and impact on their child(ren)’s educational journey. ‘It is the dream of every Kindergarten parent to receive the notice that your child is in Mrs. Creech’s class. It is like winning the lottery, only the prize is that your child will be cherished during their very 1st year of ‘real’ school. PRICELESS!’, stated by a current Discovery parent.
Thank you Mrs. Creech for being a teacher that instills a passion for learning, deeply cares for each and every child, and builds lasting relationships with students and families. Our students and parents have truly won the lottery with you choosing to make a difference each day!
Humbly your Principal,
Christopher Painter

Have you signed up to be a WATCH DOG yet?
We need you to volunteer for our WATCH DOGS program!
WATCH DOGS are Fathers, Grandfathers, Step-fathers, Uncles and other father figures that volunteer at Discovery for a day. During the day, WATCH DOGS may read and work on math with students, play at recess, attend specials, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well.

Lost & Found
Has your child lost a lunch box? Their jacket or water bottle? The Lost and Found area is located right outside of the cafeteria. All items will be donated at the end of each month to a local charity.
Please label your child’s belongings; it’s the best way to be sure it gets found or returned quickly.
