"Be Committed, Be Consistent, Be Courageous"
"No one is perfect, that's why pencils have erasers." - Wolfgang Riebe
Hello Phoenix Nation,
The beauty of each day as an educator is that it is a fresh start with our scholars. Having moments or days where we make mistakes is part of life. It is in these moments that we grow and learn. The same is true for our scholars. It is important to allow scholars the space to make mistakes, struggle through the process, and reflect on the progress without making them feel judged or punishing them for who they were last year, last week, or yesterday. When scholars no longer have a fear of being wrong, that is when they can truly flourish. Let’s be gracious and understand that our scholars are not adults, they are kids. They will make lots of mistakes and get on our last nerve and be loving. Praise the small incremental changes and be positive. We must continue to mindful of our triggers and saboteurs and not let them get the best of us. Let’s build confidence this week in each other and our scholars as we pull out the erasers and learn from one another!
With love, admiration, and gratitude,
Priscilla, Chataqua, Chrissy, and Jabez
Walk-Through Focus
Building Relationships with Scholars through engagement, getting to know your scholars on a personal level, praising scholars for meeting your expectations, and calling parents for positive behaviors.
Strategy of the Week: Identifying Similarities and Differences and Turn and Talks
IB ATL Communication: 1) Scholars can explain their understanding of a text or idea to each other. 2) All scholars can contribute to discussions. 3) Scholars are assessed or given feedback on speaking or writing concisely.
When administrators walk through your room, please do not stop instruction.
UHMS Schedule Update
Greetings, Phoenix Nation!
Effective Monday, September 7, 2019 we will change the bell schedule to make room for three lunch periods instead of two. We have two many scholars in the 6th and 7th grade lunch period. By the time the last scholar makes it through the lunch line there are only 3 - 5 minutes left in the lunch period, therefore, scholars do not have the appropriate time to eat.So many scholars in the cafeteria have led to safety issues and the unintended consequence of assigned seating and silent lunch for scholars. 6th grade will go to lunch beginning at 10:40am. Please review the new bell schedule and follow it.

STAAR Goals
Emergency Response Protocols
Team,
We had an active shooter drill last week to varying success. It is important that you are able to lock your door in a timely manner. If you cannot lock your door from the inside, make sure you can lock it from the outside using your key. Stay calm and keep scholars calm. Do not open the door or turn on the lights until a leadership team member or first responder unlocks your door and gives you an "all clear". Review your Emergency Response Protocols. We will have an earthquake and severe weather drill soon. Be ready.

Important Announcements and Information!
Repeated for Your Convenience
New Scholars: We will continue adding new scholars on Monday. Please give them and their families a warm Phoenix welcome. Reach out to Samantha if you have any questions. We will continue to add scholars until classrooms are filled or we reach our enrollment target.
Covering Classes: Using teacher planning time to cover classes will always be our last resort when we do not have sub coverage. When it does happen, we appreciate your flexibility and willingness to give up your planning time to make sure scholars receive appropriate lessons. When a classroom teacher covers another classroom during their planning time due to a shortage of subs, we will provide sub pay once you hit a full day of coverage.
Weekly Staff Huddles: UHMS Weekly Staff Huddles are on the 2nd and 4th Fridays in the Secondary Library at 7:15am. Be on time.
ESL: All ELA teachers must be ESL certified by October 31st. Getting ESL certified is not an option. If you have questions or concerns see your dean.
1st quarter Progress Reports: Grades for 1st quarter progress reports are due on Sep. 10th. Grades will lock at 11pm. Each scholar should have a minimum of 10 grades in each subject.
Released STAAR tests: We are asked NOT to use released STAAR tests from previous years in creation of any quizzes or reviews. Uplift will be utilizing these exams for assessments and want to maintain the validity of the assessment by ensuring scholars have not already seen the questions.
Scholar Essential for the Week
If someone in the class wins a game or does something well, we will congratulate that person. Claps should be at least three seconds in length with the full part of both hands meeting in a manner that will give the appropriate clap volume.
We See you 6th grade!!
