May Newsletter

Principal's Message

Dear Online Learning Pathway families,

Happy May! I have a whole "fluffle" (yes, you read that right . . . a group of rabbits can be called a colony or a fluffle. Why would anyone call them a colony when you can use fluffle instead???) of bunnies running around on my front lawn so that must mean that spring is finally here!

May and June are big months in school with courses finishing up, exams, awards ceremonies, year end liturgies, grade 9 farewell . . . it's a busy time for everyone! Plus, when the sun is shining, it's so hard to focus on doing our school work but I encourage you to find ways that you can still enjoy the spring weather and get your work done. Head outside with your laptop and work on your patio instead of in your room or office or grab a blanket and head to a park to read your novel or textbook.

May is also the month of Mary and we're still in the Easter season so it's also a really big month for the church. Of course, we can't forget that it's also Mother's Day on May 8th. We want to wish all the moms, step-moms, grandmothers, and those in the role of mother a very special and happy day.

Please make sure you register for next year. Our St. Gabes program is very unique in Alberta. The earlier you register, the easier it is for us to ensure that we have staffing in place for next year.

Please read over the schedules below carefully and note the important dates that apply to you.

I pray that you all have a safe and healthy spring! Many Blessings to you all,

Many Blessings to you all,

Renee Trottier,

principal

Evergreen students who have GSACRD Chromebooks can return them to St. Teresa School in Spruce Grove. Principal Stacy Johnson will return them to St. Gabes.

Not returning resources will result in a charge to replace the item/s being issued to you.

Final Exams Organization for Delivery

Please read the information below so that you know and understand how final exams are working this year. These instructions apply to the ELA Part A written exam on May 16 and the June final exams.

Exams count for 10% of your final grade.

While we encourage all students to write final exams, we understand that there are extenuating circumstances that could prevent students from being able to do so. If you are excusing your child from writing exams, you will need to do so in writing (email) to Renee Trottier including your full name and that of your child.

PLEASE DIRECT ALL QUESTIONS ABOUT EXAMS TO PRINCIPAL, RENEE TROTTIER.

GSACRD STUDENTS:

Students need to be at school at 8:30. Exams will start shortly afterward.

St. Albert Students - All grades 7-9 students from St. Albert junior high schools (VJM, RSF, SAA, ESSMY, SGEC) will be writing finals at VJM. Mrs. Ketsa and Mrs. Lamoureux will be supervising.

Morinville/Legal - All grades 7-8 students from Morinville and Legal will be writing finals at GHP in Morinville. Grade 9 students from Morinville will be writing PATs at MCHS. Mrs. Doehring will supervise at GHP. The admin at MCHS will organize supervision for grade 9s in the office.

You will be in a room together but separate from the rest of the school population. You will need to check in at the office each morning before heading to your classroom for your exam.

You are not allowed to stay at the school so you will have to arrange for transportation from the school after the exam. You must stay for at least one hour for your exam before you can leave and you have up until double the amount of time given to write the exam (4 hours). If you are finished your exam, you must leave the building as there will not be any supervision. Your teachers will be online in the afternoon should you require any help with studying.

You will not have access to yellow school busses during exams.

EVERGREEN STUDENTS:

Students need to be at school at 8:30. Exams will start shortly afterward.

All students from Evergreen Catholic will be writing exams at their home base schools. Evergreen staff will supervise your exams.

Your exams will be the same exams that the GSACRD students are writing.

Our Staff Arises to give back to our community

On Friday, April 29, our grades 7-12 staff joined together to volunteer at the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Edmonton. We spent the day learning about what Habitat for Humanity does for the community and helping them to sort, move items, and put together furniture to sell in the Restore. If you're ever in need of items for renovations, check out the Restore. We had no idea that they had so many amazing new items like tile, flooring, rock, furniture, etc. and it all goes to helping families get housing.

ARISE! Get Up, Get Going and Go with God!

"Arise! I have appointed you as a witness

of what you have seen!"(Acts 26:16)

Our GSACRD Faith theme is in its second year of, "Arise! Get Up, Get Going and Go with God!"

This year, we are focusing on the "Get Going!" part of our theme. How do students, staff and parents know, model and witness Jesus Christ?

Easter Season and Month of Mary

May is a big month this year! We are still in the season of Easter until Pentecost Sunday on June 5 but May is also the month of Mary so we have a lot to celebrate this year!

Historians aren’t exactly sure why May was chosen to honour Mary, but many believe that May being the month when spring is in full bloom has a lot to do with it. May is the height of spring–gardens everywhere are alive with blooming flowers and trees are filling their branches with leaves. This new beginning and new birth in nature reminds us of the life Mary gave to Jesus. Without Mary giving birth to Jesus, all the events that followed: Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection wouldn’t have happened. So, it’s believed that May (when nature is showing signs of life) is the ideal month to honour the woman who gave life to our Saviour.

When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, they could have gossiped and complained about how their plans and dreams were broken. Instead they gave thanks to God because His plans are better even and especially when we don't get what we planned. Give thanks to God always - Father Goyo.

Counselling Services

OLP students have access to counselling services through their primary registered school. School counsellors are able to provide social and emotional support to students both online or at school. Counselling referrals can be made by parents or teachers. Support is provided for individual or family concerns and referrals to outside agencies can be accessed through school counsellors.

Happy Mother's Day

On behalf of the staff of the Online Learning Pathway, I would like to wish all of the mothers, grandmothers, step-mothers, and those in the role of mother, a very happy Mother's Day on May 8th.

Attendance

If your child is going to be absent from school:

Please note - your child will be entered with an unexcused absence if we have not been informed that they will be absent.

Digital Citizenship

Although students may be learning at home, this is a gentle reminder that everyone must treat our digital spaces (Google Classroom/Google Meets) as a physical classroom. The same expectations of students are required: students must be respectful, attentive and engaged.

Did you change your contact information?

Remember to call your child's base school AND our Online Learning Pathway teachers if you changed your email address, phone number or physical address. If you're not getting communication from us, it's because we don't have your correct contact info.

Online Learning Pathway School

The Online Learning Pathway School is a partnership with Evergreen Catholic School Division and Greater St. Albert School Division. It is attended by students from Legal, Morinville, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Westlock, and Hinton. Students are learning from home in an online environment with a teacher directing lessons via Google Meet. Contact us if you have questions or comments.
