Social Development

How do kids develop socially?

What is Social Development?

Social development is learning the values, knowledge and skills that enable children to relate to others effectively and to contribute in possible ways to family, school, and community.

What Does Social Development Look Like?

Kids enjoy being with other people. They are aware that other people are present. Kids will show emotion towards other kids who are feeling the same way. When there is a problem with another kid, the child may act out emotionally or physically. Kids will start to look for other kids their age at the store or the park.

How to Promote Social Development

To help your child with social development, you should support self-esteem, help them build problem solving skills, model appropriate social behavior and play with them! Help them interact with other kids when at the park or at a birthday party. Don't force them to engage with other kids, but encourage them to be social. Help them come out of their shell!

Advice for Parents

If your child isn't outgoing and overly social right away, don't worry about it. Your child may be shy and isn't comfortable with being placed in a foreign social situation. Let your child associate with who they want and let them develop on their own. Don't force them to do anything and let them know that you are there for them.
