Principal's Weekly Update

RAISE Goal: to celebrate everything that I have achieved this year

Te reo phrase of the week: haere atu ki te wharepaku (Go to the toilet)

Kia ora,

While attending the Year 8 Dinner on Wednesday night, I could not help feeling a sense of pride in our year 8 leavers and also our school in general. This year’s group of year 8s is the largest group that we have ever had. The students’ passion, memories, and gratitude that they shared with the audience through their speeches and comments throughout the night was truly heart-warming. A big thanks must go to Miss Rawcliffe for organising such a wonderful event and the whanau in attendance who adhered to all of our Covid requirements.

Next week is our last full week of school. Next Friday your child/ren will receive their Term 4 written report and they will also spend a session with their 2022 teacher and classmates. It’s always a great way of ‘breaking the ice’ before the start of the new school year and ensures our students are set up for success from the beginning of the year.

Kia pai to wiki (have a wonderful weekend).

Ngå mihi nui

James Willson

We should work together for the wellbeing of everyone.

Room 1

WOW, What an amazing bunch of Year 8 Leavers we have had this year! We were so lucky to celebrate their time at Matupu School with them at their Leavers Dinner on Wednesday night. Each student stood up and gave a wonderful, heart-felt speech about their time at Matapu and drew a few laughs and a few tears. We wish our Year 8’s all the best for High School next year!

Room 2

This week has been full of Christmas and end of year activities. On Thursday we shared our A-Z activity, where students had to list all of the things they had enjoyed or learnt at school this year. There were some awesome videos and presentations. Room 2 also had the pleasure of putting up the class Christmas tree and decorations . They are slowly starting to enjoy the Christmas music Miss B pops on when they are working quietly. We are working on some Christmas craft activities and hopefully will share them with some of the junior classes next week!

Room 3

We are very quickly coming to the end of the year, so in Room 3 we have been writing speeches. Our speeches are trying to persuade the audience about a set topic such as 'we should not do animal testing' or 'petrol cars are better than electric'. We will share our speech with the whole class next week.

Room 4

This week in Room 4 we have finished our playground project with a bar graph of our survey data and a piece of persuasive writing about why we need some new equipment in the playground. Everyone has made a huge effort to use some real world skills and think critically about our school. We have also been using our everyday superpowers by practising how to give and take compliments and using integrity in games. Our favourites are red light green light and possum tag! We have started Christmas a little early with a fun advent calendar with some kind messages and activities. It has been a great week!

Room 5

Room 5 has been super busy this week with lots of hands-on learning! We really enjoyed having a 'Lucky dip' to find what our challenge was when we were learning about Measurement! We learnt about standard and non-standard units, made a block tower to measure height, had to create a ramp to roll a car down, had to measure and organise smallest to largest ... the list goes on! Loads of fun!

We also were busy using the laser cutter and then decorating some super special ornaments to bring home. It was very exciting to also use a power tool and drill some holes!

Room 6

Room 6 was really lucky to have Mrs Martinez for the day on Monday. She brought a selection of snails and a huge Tiger slug with her! Much fun was had experiencing the feel of a snail crawling across hands and watching them on a mirror before collecting twigs to construct their own snail with twisted and rolled newspaper for the shell. They looked fantastic and everyone had a great day. Thanks Mrs Martinez!
