Student Health Advisory Committee (SHAC)
What is SHAC? What does it do?
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group appointed by the LVISD Board of Trustees, which provides guidance, recommendations, and support in the eight components of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Coordinated School Health Model.
The SHAC is composed of a group of individuals from different segments of the community. By law, a majority of the members must be parents of the students enrolled in the district and who are not employed by the district. Therefore, the LVISD SHAC is made up of parents, community members, and school staff working together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs.
Evidence shows a positive correlation between utilizing one or more Coordinated School Health components and learning outcomes. For example, many school districts report their efforts with coordinating health initiatives have improved attendance, lower rates of teenage pregnancy, increased participation in physical fitness activities, less smoking among students and staff, and a greater interest in healthier lifestyles.

IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ!!!
THE ADMINISTRATION OF NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION IS NOT PERMITTED
LVISD will not supply any non-prescription medication to students. Non-prescription medication includes, but limited to analgesics, antipyretics, antacids, antihistamines, decongestants, cough/cold preparations, throat lozenges, home remedies, homeopathic preparations, vitamins or other nutritional aids, and physicians samples. Parents may fill out a short-term medication request, and supply their own OTC medication to be given by the campus nurse. Medication will not be accepted in an envelope, foil, or mislabeled container
PRESCRIPTION AND OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION MAY BE GIVEN AT SCHOOL IF IT IS IN THE ORIGINAL PHARMACY LABELED CONTAINER AND THE APPROPRIATE FORMS ARE COMPLETED.
Medication will not be accepted in an envelope, foil, or mislabeled container. ANY medication, whether prescription or over the counter that is intended for long-term use, greater than two weeks will need the Long Term Medication Form and must be completed by the physician and parent and the medication must be in the original pharmacy container.
MEDICATIONS ARE OFTEN ESSENTIAL FOR CERTAIN HEALTH CONDITIONS AND TO MAINTAIN OPTIMAL HEALTH AND WELL BEING.
Please bring all medication to the nurse's clinic. All medication is stored and locked in the clinic. Certain exemptions may apply for Epi-Pens &/or inhalers and will be determined by your physician and campus nurse. At the end of the year, it is required that medication is picked up by the parent, if this is not possible the medication may be placed in a sealed envelope and the parent must assume responsibility for this transport. Some types of medication will not be sent home in a sealed envelope and if not picked up will be disposed of by the campus nurse.
UNASSIGNED EPI-PENS
While LVISD does have a policy adopting the use of these unassigned emergency medications, currently LVISD does not have any doses on hand to administer, and 911 will be called in place of the emergency medications. We are currently working to obtain these very important medications.
