Klem North Chronicles
June 2018
From the Desks of the Principals
June has arrived, and we are enjoying all the excitement that comes along with it! Today our UPK students participated in the final mile of their marathon, fifth graders celebrated a year of hard work with a pool party, and kindergarteners held an end of year celebration filled with joyful singing!
A few special upcoming dates include:
June 12 - Grade 5 DARE Ceremony
June 13 - Field Day/Picnic Day
June 14 - Flag Day Ceremony
June 19 - Last day for students!
Just a reminder, your child's end of the year report card will be electronic.
We hope the final seven days of school are filled with wonderful memories to carry your child into the summer. Enjoy the sunshine!
From the Nurse's Office
Tdap
Pertussis is always present in the community and can cause substantial illness among adolescents and adults. As a reminder to the parents/guardians of students entering 6th grade in next September, NYS is requiring each student to have a Tdap booster (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis), as required by PUBLIC HEALTH LAW 2164, and provide the health office with documentation from the physician regarding the immunization. If your student will not be turning 11 until the fall, he/she will be granted a 2 week time period following their birthday to provide documentation to the nurse at Willink Middle School. Tdap is NOT the same as DtaP.
Physical and Dental Exams
All students in K, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades are required by NYS to have a current well child physical and dental exams on file in our office. If your child will be having a physical or dental appointment this summer, please send a copy into the Health Office. Physical and/or dental examination forms are available to print on the WCSD’s Health Office website.
Foot Injuries
We continue to get many injuries to toes and feet due to wearing flip-flops in school and on the playground. If your child is going to wear flip-flops to school, please encourage them to bring sneakers in their backpack to change into before going out to recess.
End of the Year Medication Pick Up
If your child has any medication in the Health Office, don’t forget to pick it up at the end of the school year. Letters have been sent home to those who have medication currently held in the health office. Any medication not picked up by June 19th will be discarded. New medication orders are required 2018-2019 school year. Check the Klem North website for times to drop off medication prior to the start of school next fall.
Don’t Forget
Sunscreen, sunglasses and helmets when bike riding or skateboarding! Have a safe and great summer!

2018-19 BUDGET APPROVED BY ONE WEBSTER COMMUNITY & BOE MEMBERS ELECTED
Thank you to the Webster Central School District community for exercising your right to vote on Tuesday, May 15, and approving the proposed 2018-19 budget by a 72% margin! We also congratulate Sue Casey and David Metzger, who were elected to three-year terms on the board of education, beginning on July 1, 2018. We also thank board member Bill Kent for his service over the past year.
The board extends its thanks to members of this year’s Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) for their participation and invaluable feedback throughout this year’s budgeting process. If you would like to learn more about the development of school budgets, we invite you to serve on the 2018-19 BAC. Please e-mail Lisa Borrino, WCSD’s Business Office, lisa_borrino@webstercsd.org, or call her at 216-0017, if you would like to serve on next year’s BAC. Thank you in advance!
WCSD ANNOUNCES SCHOOL START-TIME COMMUNITY FORUM - TUESDAY, JUNE 5
At the request of the board of education during its November 2, 2017, meeting, Webster CSD began to explore, study, and problem-solve around the complex issue of potential changes to school start times. Since the first district-wide start time study group meeting on January 31, elementary and secondary work groups comprised of district parents, teachers, administrators, and local medical professionals have been meeting throughout the spring to gather further community feedback and to discuss possible next steps. In addition, Webster CSD Superintendent Carmen Gumina has personally interviewed more than 900 middle and high school students to get their thoughts on any potential changes to school start times.
All of the information gathered by the elementary and secondary work groups will be shared during a Webster CSD School Start-Time Community Forum on Tuesday, June 5, at the Willink Middle School cafetorium, 900 Publishers Parkway, from 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. The One Webster community is invited to not only hear the groups’ findings, but also to provide further feedback as this critical issue for our students is studied.
As previously shared, this is not a short-term study. If the board of education determines that changes in Webster CSD are necessary and possible, those changes wouldn’t take place until fall 2019, however, it is important that the district continues to research this critical issue.
Please plan to attend this important community forum on a topic that impacts all Webster CSD students.
