Third Grade News
Week of January 22nd
🐈⬛ Happenings
Please ask your child if they have working headphones at school as they are needed for assessments and are used regularly in the classroom.
Middle of the year benchmarks will take place this month. We look forward to seeing all the growth students have made thus far.
Please ensure that your child's chromebook is charged each night.
Please label your child's jackets, hats, etc. so when they are misplaced they can find their way back.
Regular attendance is vital to your child's success at school. Please make every effort to have your child at school daily. Late arrivals and early checkouts also cause students to miss a lot of instructional time.
Please login weekly with your child to view grades and check for missing assignments. If you need a parent portal login for PowerSchool please contact the front office. Students can also login on their Chromebook to check grades.
Note from PE 🏃♂️
Kids Heart Challenge Envelopes went home this week with each student! As we approach February -- American Heart Month, students will be learning how to keep their heart healthy all month long. The Kids Heart Challenge is an exciting and fun-loving event where students get to exercise by jumping rope, hula hooping, and dribbling a basketball to keep their heart healthy. The Kids Heart Challenge event will be on Friday February 2 during MI time. We appreciate everyone that has helped the school with this event and the many lives that you have helped in the past years through donations to the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide and stroke ranks second globally. We want all of our students to understand the importance of keeping their heart healthy. A healthy heart is central to overall good health and embracing a healthy lifestyle can lower your risk for heart disease at any age.
Every student will participate in the Kids Heart Challenge event whether they raise money or not, and every student received a heart keychain character just being a student here at WOES and promising to take care of their heart! Students will also have the opportunity to earn wristbands and a lifesaver award, and every class will compete against other classes to see who the top fundraising class in each grade level is. The class in grades k-2 that raises the most money will earn popsicles and the class in grades 3-5 that raise the most money will earn popsicles. Students can also earn the chance to pie a PE teacher for being top fundraisers. You can start raising money now, and all money is due by February 29. Please look at the KHC envelope and contact us with any questions you may have. Thank you for being a heart hero!
***Some of you were required to enter a t-shirt size when registering your child- please know this is an ERROR! For now, you may enter sizing for the purpose of completing your registration process, but please know students will not earn a t-shirt for any donation. BUT, each student has already received a special heart hero keychain for being a part of Kids Heart Challenge at White Oak Elementary School! The American Heart Association is working hard to resolve the issue and remove the t-shirt sizing requirement.

📖 What We are Learning
Math- Reasoning with shapes and their attributes.
We will begin area and perimeter soon.
Reading-
Determining the main idea in nonfiction text, recounting the key details and how they support the main idea.
Writing-
Students are practicing cursive. Students are also working on responding to text dependent questions.
Science- We will continue learning about Force and Motion/ Solar System
Social Studies- Explain how climate and physical characteristics affect the ways in which people live in a place or region. Explain how movement of goods, people, and ideas is impacted by the geography of a place or region.
➕ Math ➖
Fantastic Five
The Fantastic Five is a tool that we use to spiral review topics that have been taught to your child. The question types are meant to have students show their work and use their math strategies that we have been working on in class. It is a great idea to go over these questions again with your child to ensure their understanding. The goal is to keep previously taught skills fresh and to get students used to the different question stems. The yearly testing tries to trick our students and this gives them the upper hand as the wording is very similar to what they are expected to know on state test. During the 1st 9 weeks I will accept test corrections for partial credit. The daily sheets are for practice only and are not graded.

Less-fewer, usually a clue for subtraction
Missing value- a value omitted from an equation that is needed to make the equation true [e.g., (2 × 3) × 5 = 2 × (3 × ⬜)]
More- greater number, usually a clue to add
