Reflections from Elder's Desk
For the last few days, I have examined data from the first six weeks to determine the progress our students made and identified students who were unsuccessful academically. Our ninth-grade students, students from impoverished backgrounds, and children of color are the student groups who were the most unsuccessful. Though some of the students did not perform to the level that we expected, we will provide opportunities for them to refocus and get back on track. Moreover, we will continue to model what we expect, maintain a positive environment, integrate relevant research-based practices, and meet the students where they are to help them reach their full potential. Student success is our number one priority so we will not cast them aside or give up on them! Let me challenge each of to identify at least one student who did not put his best foot forward and be the model the student needs to be victorious.
As a campus, our data yielded the following results:
· Attendance rate--96.02%
· Discipline issues--missed detentions and inappropriate behavior (the top two infractions)
· Grade data--Ninth grade students enrolled in English I, Algebra I, and Biology were problematic areas
As you reflect on the first six weeks, take some time and think about the following questions:
1.) For struggling students, how have you partnered with parents to address this issue?
2.) What do you need to stop doing to help strengthen learning for your students?
3.) How can you help foster a growth mindset in students who provide little or no effort?
4.) What are your next steps for your advanced level students to stretch their minds?
Reflection is a critical piece in the learning process. I would encourage you to think about how your first six weeks went. Think about at least one student who was disconnected, and develop a plan of action to help that student succeed!
We are Driven by Purpose at AMCHS.
