Pre-K Registration Opens Feb. 4
The online application process for the 2019-2020 Bibb County School District Pre-K Program will be open from Feb. 4-28. The application can be accessed through the District website.
Submission of the application does NOT guarantee the enrollment. Selection is based on a random computer lottery, and there is no cost to participate.
Students may attend Pre-K at their zoned neighborhood school or parents may choose to register them at one of these alternative locations: Heard Academic Magnet School, Northwoods Academy, Burdell-Hunt Magnet School, Alexander II Magnet School or Vineville Academy of the Arts. Transportation will not be provided to non-zoned schools, and parents may only register their child for one school.
Parents who need assistance with applying online may visit the Central Office, 484 Mulberry Street, Suite 210, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday between Feb. 4-28. The office will be closed for Winter Break the week of Feb. 18-22.
Parents will be notified by email by March 15, if their child has been accepted into the District's Pre-K Program. If a child's name is not selected, his or her name will be automatically placed on the waiting list for the school to which they applied.
If a child is selected, parents will be required to provide registration documents during the on-site registration process. If registration documents are not received during this time frame, the child's Pre-K slot will be forfeited. Registration documents include:
- Two proofs of residence (mortgage statement/lease agreement and utility bill for address of residence),
- Child's certified birth certificate,
- Child's Social Security card,
- Immunization - GA form 3231 (may be turned in as soon as the child turns 4),
- Ear, Eye, Dental and Nutrition Screening - GA form 3300 (may be turned in as soon as the child turns 4),
- Photo ID of parent/guardian.
Also, parents must attend a scheduled orientation before the 2019-2020 school year. Pre-K teacher will contact families. Only students that attend zoned schools are eligible for transportation through the Bibb County Board of Education.
NOTE: Pre-K is not a mandatory program.
Porter Elementary Chosen for Literacy Project
"We are pursuing a 'one book-one school' initiative where everyone - parents, students, staff, and faculty - will receive a copy of the same book and participate in a Porter Community-wide reading project," said Principal Chris Kirby, noting that the initiative was assisted by the school's partnership with Middle Georgia State University. "Our plan is to engage everyone involved in the life of Porter in the reading process and help instill passion for reading regardless of age."
The book is titled "The World According to Humphrey," and NADE members are purchasing copies in both English and Spanish for the school. Click here for more information about NADE's efforts.

Bernd Becomes 'Leader In Me' Lighthouse School
The District recently announced that Bernd Elementary School has been named as a “Leader in Me” Lighthouse School by Franklin Covey Co. This recognition comes because the school has achieved outstanding results in school and student outcomes, by implementing “Leader in Me” process with fidelity. It is also because of the extraordinary impact the school is having on staff, students, parents, and the greater community.
“We are thrilled to recognize Bernd Elementary as a ‘Leader in Me’ Lighthouse School. Schools who achieve the Lighthouse Milestone are great examples of a strong leadership model, process, and of what it means to be a ‘Leader in Me’ school,” said Sean Covey, President, FranklinCovey Education. “This school has experienced transformational results by implementing the principles and practices related to ‘Leader in Me.’ We are so pleased to celebrate the success they are experiencing.”
The “Leader in Me” initiative utilizes and integrates several leadership, social-emotional learning, quality, and educational models and processes from past and current thought leaders including “The 4 Imperatives of Great Leaders” and “The 4 Disciplines of Execution.” The process includes student participation in goal setting, data tracking, leadership roles, Student-Led Conferences, leadership environments, and Leadership Events. “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is also a key component of the overall “Leader in Me” process.
"The process of prepping for the review was amazing. It became a unifying force, a common goal, one that brought clarity, and it truly built synergy,” said Dr. Chad Thompson, Bernd Elementary principal. “Bernd students, faculty, staff, and parents were and are all in, seeing the connections and the benefits of the application of the ‘Leader in Me’ framework. We are on this journey together, a journey that takes everyone, every day, and we are excited, to say the least. The work definitely doesn't stop here."

Veterans Elementary Celebrates Reading Grant
The second-grade students at Veterans Elementary participated in an assembly for Community Reading Day. Each second grade student received a copy of the book "The Magician's Hat" by Malcolm Mitchell and watched a motivational video from Mitchell, a former University of Georgia football star and Super Bowl champion, as well as an animated video of him reading the book. Veterans Elementary Principal Dr. Cleveland Johnson also read a portion of the book to the students. This event was part of a Georgia Early Learning Reading Initiative Grant that Veterans received from the Governor's Office of Student Achievement in cooperation with the Get Georgia Reading Campaign and the Share the Magic Foundation/Read with Malcolm. All students at Veterans have been participating in a READbowl as part of the grant as well.
Ballard-Hudson Staff Members Learn About Poverty
Faculty and staff at Ballard Hudson Middle School kicked off the new year with a poverty simulation. This professional development activity, a partnership with Mercer University, sought to shed light on the issues that low-income families across our District face.
"We know that poverty has a profound impact on education," said Lauren Shinholster, Mercer's coordinator of community engagement. "We want our teachers to be aware of those challenges."
As part of the exercise, participants were placed in family groups with specific amounts of resources. They were then tasked with securing funds for transportation and other services throughout the community while also getting their children to school.
SOAR Academy Students Attend Career Event
Students at SOAR Academy participated in the GEAR UP “It’s Your Choice” Event. Afterwards, students had the opportunity to speak individually with College and Career Representatives from the community.
Some of those representatives included WorkSource Macon-Bibb, Goodwill Industries, One-Stop Career Services, Central Georgia Technical College, Mercer University Educational Opportunity Center, Wesleyan College, Georgia Military College, and Middle Georgia State University.“At first, I didn’t want to go to college but now I know it’s important to get a good start on a good career," said student Derrick Williams.

Howard High Access Students Sell Coffee, Doughnuts
The Access Program at Howard High School has its very own coffee shop. These students sell coffee and doughnuts to classmates, faculty and staff, with profits going right back into the program for unified PE and other initiatives like field trips.
“They like the social interaction,” said Access teacher Julia Gilbert. “These other students know who they are, and they also have fun.”
The doughnuts are donated through a partnership with The Casserole Shop and Bakery, and the coffee equipment is provided through a partnership with Community Coffee. Thanks to these partners and the efforts of the students, the coffee shop has brought in about $4,000 this school year!
