Family Night
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first Family Night of the Year!
We had a great turnout and it is always a special thing to see our community uniting together via Zoom around a shared experience!
Save the date for our November Family Night which will be a cooking night! We will come together on Wednesday, November 10th to read "Bilal Cooks Daal" and try to make our very own daal.
All families are invited to join our event, but we only have 100 copies of this book to giveaway, so please RSVP here to receive your copy of the book!
Please check your child's blue folder for WIN Time Paperwork!
Today we will be sending home notices to students who have been invited to participate in our first cycle of WIN (What I Need) time. WIN time is an opportunity for us to provide additional literacy support to students who are below grade level in reading. These papers are going home to about 90 students in grades 1st-5th so if your child receives one, please read through the information and sign and return the bottom portion of the letter!
These interventions will happen two times a week (Mondays and Wednesdays) for an additional hour. Cycle one will run from Monday, November 1st through Wednesday, December 15th.

Pool Testing by Concentric
Great news! Last week's pool test results came back negative for all the 3rd-5th grade classrooms that tested! Remember that these are pool results and not individual tests so you will not receive individual results from your child. If any positive cases arise from our pool results, we will conduct rapid testing with that group on Friday and send exposure notices to affected classrooms.
Today we tested all TK-5th grade students at LUCHA who turned in their signed consent forms. This pool testing will continue every Wednesday!
Here is an overview presentation we provided to the students prior to testing:

Kimochis Communication Key #4
This week we will be learning Kimochis Key #4 - using words that help instead of words that hurt. Kimochis Key 4 helps us to think before we speak and to consider our word choice. We have been talking about words that make our hearts feel good and words that hurt our feelings and, of course, our hearts. We have emphasized that everybody makes mistakes and we can all accidentally use words that hurt.
Our students can use the following communication tool when they hear hurtful words:
1. Place a hand over your heart
2. Show a gentle, but hurt facial expression
3. Make eye contact with the person who hurt you
4. Say, “Ouch” in a soft, but hurt tone.
For older children: make eye contact, say the person’s name, and then say, “That hurt.” When the person acknowledges they made a mistake say, “Thanks”.
Students know that this communication tool is a safe, kind way to let someone know that they have hurt your feelings.
Why this skill is important: When students use helpful words and avoid hurtful words they can resolve social-emotional conflicts in peaceful ways. Children will understand the difference between helping and hurtful words.
Halloween/Harvest Festival
Students will be permitted to wear their Halloween costumes to school on Friday, October 29th. After our LUCHA Launch that morning, we will invite classes to out one at a time to parade past our camera area so that all students can admire the costumes of their school mates via Zoom. Unfortunately, no parents will be permitted on campus, but everyone is invited to tune into this virtual parade.
While there won't be a harvest festival as we typically have had in the past, classrooms will partake in a variety of arts and crafts activities.
Please note that candy is not permitted at school and students are not allowed to pass out goodie bags or treats to other classmates.
After School Program
If your child has still not been included in the YMCA program and you are still interested in securing a spot for your child, please reach out to our site director, Danery Cervantes at danery.cervantes@ymcasv.org or (408) 708-6124.
We are working hard to hire additional staff to accommodate our community need!
