UPDATED REGISTRATION MESSAGE FROM COUNSELING STAFF 4/5/22
ONLINE REGISTRATION BEGAN TUESDAY 4/5/22
Dear students and families,
The course registration process began on the morning of Tuesday, April 5th. We understand that you may have many questions. The counselors will be available to meet with students starting Wednesday, April 6th during both lunches in Room CS208 to address their questions and concerns regarding the Skyward course registration process. The counselors will continue to be available during lunch every day until April 14th (except Thursday, April 7th).
Please remember that each student has a Canvas page that includes all information needed for course registration. After selecting courses in Skyward, students should review their courses with their parent/guardian and then complete and submit the Registration Agreement Form available under the Announcement section of their Canvas Page. Students cannot delete teacher recommendations; they must request that a counselor make those adjustments via the Registration Agreement Form.
The most effective way to communicate concerns to your counselor is to list your concerns on the Registration Agreement Form (question 6) and students are welcome to stop by and see their counselors in room CS208 at lunch until registration ends on April 14th.
We apologize that there may be a delay in responding to emails during this busy time.
Sincerely,
The ORHS Counselors

TMTA MATH TEST - APRIL 5TH
OPEN ENROLLMENT PERIOD
ACT Work Keys
The state of Tennessee is generously providing the ACT Work Keys assessment for all seniors this year. Please complete the Registration Form for ACT WorkKeys to sign up. Students must register for the test, but there is no fee. The ACT Work Keys will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 8:00 a.m. (This test will coincide with state testing for freshmen and sophomores, so seniors will not be missing classes for this test). Please check your email and/or the Class of 2022 Canvas page for more information about the ACT Work Keys.
These assessments measure foundational skills required for success in the workplace, and help measure the workplace skills that can affect job performance.
WorkKeys assessments are:
• Relevant—WorkKeys® assessments are developed to solve actual workplace problems. Unlike other assessments, they don’t simply give an indication of reading and writing competency. Instead, they measure a range of hard and soft skills relevant to any occupation, at any level, and across industries. The test is useful to students who are attending college or technical school after high school as it can inform decisions about potential majors and future careers. Students who are entering the workplace or military after high school can use these assessments to identify strengths to guide choices about career training.
• Recognized— Individuals who successfully complete the three WorkKeys assessments— Applied Math, Graphic Literacy, and Workplace Documents—earn the WorkKeys National Career Readiness Certificate® (WorkKeysNCRC®), a valuable credential for students and job seekers seeking to verify foundational workplace skills.
Applied Math
The Applied Math assessment measures critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and problem solving techniques for situations that actually occur in today’s workplace. While individuals may use calculators and conversion tables to help with the problems on the assessment, math skills are still needed to think them through.
Graphic Literacy
Workplace graphics come in a variety of formats, but all communicate a level of information. From charts to graphs, diagrams to floor plans, identifying what information is being presented and understanding how to use it are critical to success. The Graphic Literacy assessment measures the skill needed to locate, synthesize, and use information from workplace graphics.
Workplace Documents
Employees need to be able to understand written text to do a job. The Workplace Documents assessment measures the skills people use when they read and use written text such as memos, letters, directions, signs, notices, bulletins, policies, and regulations on the job.
Successful completion of WorkKeys core assessments can lead to earning an ACT WorkKeys® National Career Readiness Certificate™ (ACT WorkKeys NCRC®)—a credential that verifies the skills found to be most essential across industries and occupations. Tens of thousands of employers recognize the value of the NCRC, and many recommend the credential to candidates. Each assessment offers varying levels of difficulty. The levels build on each other, incorporating the skills assessed at the previous levels. For example, at Level 5, individuals need the skills from Levels 3, 4, and 5. The complexity increases as the quantity and/or density of the information increases.

SENIOR COMMENCEMENT SPEAKERS
SENIORS - CONTRIBUTIONS NEEDED FOR ORPSEF
The Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation seeks your help in continuing the story of an Oak Ridge Schools education. You are soon to become alumni as members of the Class of 2021, the 79th graduating class of ORHS. The Foundation is seeking your help in continuing the story of Oak Ridge Public Schools’ memories, a story that began in the year of 1943-44. The first seventy-five years of those stories are chronicled in our book, "Celebrating 75 Years of Excellence in Education in the Oak Ridge Schools: 1943-2018". Since then, the Foundation has collected stories from each successive graduating class, storing those narratives on our website at http://www.orpsef.org/archives/Class We sincerely hope you will submit your memories and therewith help to memorialize the ORHS Class of 2022.
We solicit your creative thoughts and writing styles while also offering the following prompts as suggestions for topics of interest--this list is not exclusive:
o Considering all the years you have been in the Oak Ridge Schools, what special moments come to mind? (Teachers, classmates, courses, projects, activities,...)
o Describe a challenge (or challenges) faced in your schooling and who or what helped you overcome it.
o The last two years of your high school career was, to say the least, atypical. What support from ORHS/teacher would you consider most helpful? What lessons did you learn from this experience?
o What traditions and experiences in the Oak Ridge Schools do you hope will be continued for future students? Please submit your writing to mfeuer@ortn.edu by March 31, 2022. Please include in your response the post-secondary school/path you will attend.
NEW SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
ORHS English Department Scholarship
The ORHS English Department is offering a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior who plans to attend a two- or four-year college or university. To apply, see Mr. Feuer in CS 319 for an application form, and return to him the completed form along with a response to the following prompt. All responses will be anonymously reviewed, and a winner chosen by a committee of teachers across multiple subjects. The submission deadline is Friday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m.
“Words—so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them”—Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Consider this observation by Nathaniel Hawthorne and his understanding of the power of words. And in a well written essay, discuss the power of the written word and an experience when you observed directly “how potent for good and evil” words can be. Include in your 400 to 600-word response why you consider learning to write effectively an essential skill for your success in college, career, and life.

SENIOR PARENTS - WORK ETHIC DISTINCTION CERTIFICATES
What is the certificate for?
The Oak Ridge Schools Board of Education has approved the attainment of a Work Ethic Distinction, a distinction that has been available for seniors since 2020. What it entails is students providing a certificate to potential employers that they have been demonstrating desirable work skills.
How do I earn this certificate?
Students are to attain 20 points from the list shown below the image of the certificate here. When they provide evidence of success on these measures, they will be awarded a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate that will serve as part of the student’s job application portfolio.
Logos of employers who have already indicated they are willing to grant preference in interviewing a student who presents a Work Ethic Distinction Certificate are included on the face of the certificate. The list of employers who want to join this effort is growing. An ongoing list of such partner employers will be kept at our local chambers of commerce.
Please have students download the application here and complete the applications for this distinction and return them to Dr. Holly Cross, Supervisor of Career Readiness—ORHS CS244 before April 1, 2022 for recognition at graduation.
