SBLSD Equity Advisory Council
TBD
Dear EAC Members,
Although the time was short, I had a blast spending it with baby Isaac (#3 for us) and family! But I am back from paternity leave and ready to roll! Please see below for information and updates.
Equity Advisory Council Meeting Recap!
First and foremost, thank you all that attended the meeting on September 28th. It was great to see everyone in-person and those who attended on Zoom!
For those who were not able to attend this last meeting, our next meeting will be on December 8, 2022 from 5:15pm - 6:45pm. Location is still to be determined but mark your calendars and hopefully we will see you then!
Below is a recap of the meeting:
- Because there were new members to EAC, we had Marilee Hill-Anderson, Dr. Laurie Dent, and community member Keyle Kosowsky present the roots, experiences, and truths of EAC.
- The vision of EAC 2022-23 School Year focuses on the work that needs to be done in the workgroups. Each workgroup has a direct impact to school systems.
- We broke out into workgroups: School Curriculum, Staff PD, Community Celebrations, and Staff Retention and Recruitment. In each group, people shared stories, ideas, and thoughts about the work that needs to be done.
- Next step is to ensure that people meet in their workgroup prior to December 8th.
- If you need to sign up for a workgroup, please let me know via email: joshua_agpalza@sumnersd.org.
We're ALL in!
Responding to Bias:
- On October 14th, Adrienne Chacon, Director of HR, and I facilitated a 3.5 hour training to all building secretaries, library assistants, and campus safety officers on responding to bias incidents. This is to ensure that all staff are trained to support a safe learning environment.
- On October 14th, the Director or Maintenance and Operations, Director of Athletics, and the Director of CTE facilitated a 3.5 hour training to all members of their departments on responding to bias incidents. This is to ensure that all staff are trained to support a safe learning environment.
Restorative Practices:
- In alignment with Strategic Plan Goal 4: Elimination of Disparities in Student Access and Success, Central Office and Building Leaders will be attending the International Institute for Restorative Practices to learn and implement restorative strategies that support the elimination of disproportionalities in suspensions and expulsion rates across the district, as well building strong relational communities.
