SSMS Weekly Update

09/24/2021

Hello SSMS Families,

Monday September 27th is a student holiday. SSMS teachers will be participating in staff development with DSMS teachers to study and review state learning standards and focus on curriculum alignment with an eye on student outcomes. We hope you enjoy this first three day weekend of the Fall. Please mark your calendars for Monday October 11th, which will be a holiday for students and staff.

Wrap it up!

Have you seen the new wrap in the athletics hallway? This project is the culmination of a vision that began more than 4 years ago when SSMS originally opened. We want to thank our SSMS Sports Boosters for this beautiful wrap and for bringing Tiger spirit to our athletics hallway.

UIL Eligibility

Today is the last day of the first 6 weeks of school and is the demarcation for UIL eligibility. Students must be passing all classes in order to continue to be eligible for all UIL sports and fine arts opportunities. Any student who loses eligibility will have the opportunity to regain eligibility by passing all classes at the end of the first 9 week grading period, which ends on October 15th.

Fall MAP Testing

Fall MAP Testing is now complete. This diagnostic tool is used in the beginning of the school year to measure student’s literacy and numeracy skills. Individual reports will be emailed to parents in the coming weeks. Students who are receiving intervention services will take the MAP in the middle of the school year to measure growth. At the end of the year all students will take the MAP test to measure progress made across the school year.

Friday Night Football

DSHS has created a seating area for all middle school students at the Friday night football games. The new middle school section is on the north end of the home stands, in the lower section, just beyond the high school student section. No middle school students should be sitting in the upper level of the stands unless accompanied by an adult. In recent weeks there have been some behavior concerns with upper elementary and middle school students at the games. Middle School administrators will be at the games as well to encourage appropriate behavior. We are asking parents to accompany their students to the game and check in with their kids at least periodically. These new procedures are being implemented to establish a more positive and safe environment for all the fans.

Morning Tutorials or Tiger Win Time

Morning Tutorials run from 8:30 - 8:55 each morning. This is the time of day when students report to classes to get help with assignments, retake tests, do test corrections, etc. Tiger Win Time is the block of time reserved for teachers to call in specific students so they can reteach important information and skills to assist students who are falling short of mastery. Teachers stamp “tutorial required” in the student’s agenda for the day of the reteach lesson and students report to their teacher promptly at 10:40. This is not a time for students to go to their core teachers for retakes, help with assignments, test corrections, etc. Tiger Win Time and morning tutorials are both critical elements of our plan to help as many students as possible master the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the next grade level.

Traffic Update

Safety is our number one priority. We have seen a big improvement and a reduction in the close calls that we were seeing before at the top of the hill. Our parents have done an amazing job adjusting to the traffic pattern change at the entry. We continue to see a large number of cars picking up and dropping off students. All SSMS students qualify to ride a school bus and we highly encourage families to take advantage of this opportunity. As our enrollment grows, traffic will likely increase.
