Keynote: Paul A. Reynolds, CEO and Co-Founder of FableVision
Boston-based FableVision creates and distributes original educational media, mobile games and apps designed to move the world to a better place. Paul has helped build the multimillion-dollar firm into an internationally recognized multimedia developer and publisher, with partnerships, strategic alliances and clients across many industries - broadcast, museum, institutional, K12, educational publishing, technology and research.
Paul has collaborated with a wide range of media, museum, research and broadcast partners who are seeking a better way to reach learners and inspire life-long learning, including PBS KIDS, National Academy of Sciences, The Jim Henson Company, MIT Education Arcade, CDC, New York Hall of Science, Columbia University School of Social Work, Girl Scouts of the USA, Houghton Mifflin, Pearson, and Carnegie Hall.
As CEO, Paul also oversees the company’s K12 edtech publishing group FableVision Learning, as well as The Reynolds Center for Teaching Learning & Creativity (ReynoldsTLC.org.) The Reynolds Center is an R&D group that partners with leading researchers and educational groups looking prototype and produce ed tech tools & media that support ALL learners in more creative ways.
When he's not entrenched in all things FableVision, Paul teaches digital media production at Boston College, where he has served as adjunct faculty for over two decades. Paul is also a children's book author who collaborates with his twin brother and NY Times #1 Best-Selling Author/Illustrator Peter H. Reynolds.
Joyce Tugel, Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance
Joyce is a STEM Education Specialist at the Maine Mathematics & Science Alliance (MMSA). Her work is primarily focused on teacher leadership, professional development in the areas of science curriculum, instruction and formative assessment, and implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards. She is a co-author of two books in the NSTA Press Uncovering Student Ideas in Science series and editor of Notes from the Field–Teaching for Conceptual Change: Uncovering Student Thinking in Science Through Action Research. Joyce serves on the National Science Education Leadership Association Board of Directors, and has served as the National Science Teachers Association District II Director and Professional Development Division Director. She is a Fellow of the National Academy for Science and Mathematics Education Leadership and received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Secondary Science Teaching.
Deborah O'Connor, Science Chair, Pinkerton Academy
Deborah O’Connor is an experienced educator with over thirty years of teaching experience. She has taught middle school science, high school biology, and is currently the science department chair at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH. Deb is passionate about teaching, learning, and student success. She enjoys working with K-12 teachers and has led numerous workshops on curriculum development, Understanding by Design, Differentiated Instruction, Quality Performance Assessments, NGSS and STEM. Deb holds a M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Massachusetts – Lowell.
Program Content and Outcomes
ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
Are you looking to move beyond isolated STEM activities to a more cohesive STEM program?
Would you like to learn how to design and create STEM units that culminate with authentic performance assessments? Would you like to know how business and industry can help STEM come alive in our classrooms?
Join us as we learn, experience and apply the guiding principles of STEM integration. Participants will leave the Institute with a STEM instructional unit ready to implement in the fall.
Attendees will receive an individual license to Fablevision's Maker Studio Software, and a copy of the children’s book Going Places (Simon & Schuster), a picture book about creativity and engineering.
OUTCOMES
As a result of attending, participants will be able to:
- Move STEM instruction beyond a set of isolated activities to cohesive units that integrate STEM concepts and practices across the curriculum
- Design and create instructional units culminating in a performance assessment aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards
- Meaningfully engage Business, Industry, and Higher Education in community partnerships
