Job Description
Childcare workers care for children when parents and other family members are unavailable. They care for children's basic needs, also help prepare children for kindergarten and the older children with their homework.

Work Environment
Childcare workers spend much of their day moving around the classroom to work with the kids. Carrying children, bending to lift children, and kneeling to be at eye level with children can be physically exhausting. Childcare workers are employed in preschools, childcare centers, public schools, and private homes.
What do you need to become a childcare worker?
Many jobs require a high school diploma. Workers in Head Start programs must at least be enrolled in a program in which they will earn an associate degree.
Pay and Benefits
The median hourly wage of childcare workers was $9.28 in May 2010. Pay varies with the workers education and work setting. Employment of childcare workers is expecting to grow by 20 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations.
