Wheel and Axle
By Camila Andrea
What is a wheel and Axle
A simple lifting machine consisting of rope that unwinds from a wheel on to a cylindrical drum or shaft joined to te weel to provide mechanical advantage. The axle is a rod that goes through the wheel. This lets the wheel turn. When the axle turns, the wheel also turns.
A doorknob
A doorknob is a realife example of a wheel and an axle because it has a rod or an axle that joins the wheel were you turn it . As you turn the doorknob, both wheel and axle will turn in the same direction.
A bicycle wheel
A bicycle wheel is a wheel and axle because the rod in the middle of the wheel is considered an axle and obviously the wheel is the wheel. When these two turn in the same direction they move forward making it a good use of transportation.
A pencil sharpener
A pencil sharpener is a wheel and axle because the axle is where you turn it and the wheel is the blades moving in the Same direction
Mechanical advantage
Is the ratio of the force produced by a machine to the force applied to it , used in assessing the performance of a machine .The mechanical advantage is the relationship between the force and distance inputted and outputted by the wheel and axle and is directly related to the radius of the wheel and the axle.
To find the mechanical advantage you need to find the radius of the wheel. After that you need to find the radius of the axle. Than you divide the radius of the big wheel to the radius of the small wheel.
