Dear Parents,
Shabbat Shalom,

Explored
We continued to explore sefer Bereishit to work towards our siyum. The decorations committee started painting depictions of the parshiyot. The dvar Torah committee started to tie the theme of traveling to our everyday lives. Because we can’t start cooking until after winter break, the refreshments committee worked on organizing the events of the siyum, learning the tefillah we will need to know, and choosing songs to sing at the siyum. We realized that many of the songs we already know have to do with sefer Bereishit! We also learned that our guests for the siyum will be students from Gan Chabad. We are excited to teach them what we’ve learned!
Discovered
We discovered new ways to use our ipads in school. Mr. Chris Brown, our educational technology specialist, came to teach us about a portfolio app called “Seesaw.” We used the app to reflect on our Chanukah experiences and to view each other’s reflections. We used the apps in different ways throughout the week to keep track of our work and to see our friends’ work.
Many of us discovered that we had met some of the goals we had set a few weeks ago! We revisited our goals and decided if we had accomplished them or were still working towards them. Friends who had accomplished their goals chose new goals that they will now strive to achieve.
Created
This week, we created many types of instruments from recycled materials. On Monday, we created percussion instruments and kazoos. On Tuesday, we made harmonicas. On Wednesday, we made tambourines. On Thursday, we made harps and drumsticks. As we made the instruments, we experimented with different materials and designs to see how they would change the sound of the instrument. We also used books to research sound waves. At the end of the week, we used all of the instruments to perform as a band!
Celebrated
- We celebrated the time that we have had the opportunity to spend with Morah Butsie! We made cards to thank her and to show her our favorite memories with her. We presented our cards during morning meeting.
Wondered
What would come next in the story of Yosef? Before moving on in Sefer Bereishit, we reviewed the parshiyot we’ve learned over the last few weeks. We played a sequencing game to review the events of Yaakov’s and Yosef’s lives. We also learned parsha Vayigash to hear the rest of Yosef’s story with his brothers.
We wondered what it would be like to travel the journeys of the Avot and Emahot. We took a time machine back to ancient times and followed maps of the journeys of the avot and reviewed what happened in each place they journeyed to.
Ivrit at YLS
Dear Parents,
Dear Parents.
This week, we learned some new concepts from the story of אליעזר והגזר. The story is about how Saba Eliezer planted carrot seeds and checked every day to see if the carrots grew. When the carrots finally grew, he tried to pull them out of the ground but could not do it by himself. Savta Elisheva, Daughter Avigayil, a dog, a cat and a mouse all had to come help Saba Eliezer get the carrot out of the ground.
We learned about directions because Saba Eliezer pulled the carrot left and right. We played a direction game. I put a sticker on the children’s right hand so they would know which side is right and the side without the sticker is the left. I would call out a direction and the children would follow. For example: I would say hold up your right hand, take a step to your left. Then we danced to the song ימינה ימינה.
We learned about different sizes: small, medium, and large. We looked at seeds from different plants and checked their size. We also noticed that the seeds were different colors. We decided to see how zucchini plants grow--if they will grow in cold climate or warm climate. Each child received two plates- they put wet the cotton and put their seeds on the cotton. Then each child put one plate in the fridge and the other plate in the dark storage closet. We will check on the seeds to see which is growing faster.
At the end of the week we got to watch the movie אליעזר והגזר.
The words and phrases were learned:
grandfather Eliezer- סבא אליעזר
grandmother Elisheva- סבתא אלישבע
daughter Avigayil- הבת אביגיל
dog- כלב
cat- חתול
mouse- עכבר
carrot -גזר
