Move & Crunch Week: March 24-28
Dear Lowell Parents,
During the week of March 24 - 28 Lowell will continue our tradition of Move and Crunch Week, but we will no longer tally fruit/vegetable intake and activity. Move and Crunch Week supports our school wellness goals to promote physical activity and raise awareness of healthy eating.
This is the 54321GO! messaging we are promoting at Lowell School.
- 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day
- 4 servings of water a day
- 3 serving of low-fat dairy
- 2 hours or less of screen time a day
- 1 hour or more of exercise everyday
This is a countywide messaging effort from the DuPage County Health Department and Forward to promote a healthier lifestyle for all residents of DuPage County. (To learn more about this campaign, visit www.dupagehealth.org/forward).
During the week we have a few activities planned. Morning announcements will include information about each of these points with dancing to start out the day. At lunch a tasting of a fruit or vegetable will be available. Through a generous donation from Mariano’s, students will have a chance to sample various fruits and vegetables. On Monday and Tuesday Chef Brian from Mariano’s will attend the lunch hour to speak with the students about fruit or vegetable of the day. If you'd like to volunteer to help during the lunch hour, please sign up on the link below this letter.
To prepare for next week, please take time this weekend to talk with your child about being open-minded when trying a new food. When your children come home after school, get their feedback of the fruit or vegetable of the day. You can continue this exploration of food beyond next week by including them in your next grocery outing and have them choose a new food to taste.
If you are looking for additional resources, the website www.choosemyplate.gov is filled with information and ideas for adding fruits and vegetables into meals and snacks.
Sincerely,
Lowell Wellness Committee

Shift Days: March 27 & 28
The Green Corner
At this month's Green Club meeting, students worked on a recycled art project: they made wallets out of orange juice cartons. Check out this simple tutorial to try this fun project at home: http://spoonful.com/crafts/carton-wallet.
Discovery Day is coming!
Discovery Day will be on Monday, June 9th this year and plans are underway! Discovery Day is held during the last week of school and it is an opportunity for our students to grow, stretch, learn, discover, and try activities by introducing them to new and unique learning opportunities.
During the morning of Discovery Day, students will participate in three activities. Discovery Day is a collaborative effort made up of parent/family volunteers, teachers, staff and some outside vendors.
Leaders, co-leaders, assistants, helpers are all welcome and all are appreciated! We hope you will consider joining us and being part of the fun! Volunteer sign up sheets have been sent home. The list of past and potential ideas is linked below this article, as we have been told some of them did not have the list of activities. Please return the hard copy forms you received by Friday, March 28th.
Also, the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon will take place immediately after Discovery Day again this year. Please join us as we honor all of the volunteers that have worked so hard to make it another great year at Lowell. If you are interested in helping with this special luncheon, please check the box on your Discovery Day form and you will be contacted.
We are also looking for Field Day volunteers. Field Day occurs in the afternoon on June 9th and we need volunteers to assist the PE teachers. It is an afternoon full of action and fun!
Thanks for sending in cereal boxes to help construct our reading castle!
