COUNSELOR CORNER

Counselors

Scheduling Meetings or Teacher Conferences

Counselors are involved in several types of meetings at McCullough. We facilitate all parent-teacher conferences as well as individual meetings with parents should a particular need arise. Please note that all meetings should be scheduled in advance through the Counseling Center (832-592-5194). Due to our schedules, it is difficult to be able to meet with parents who don’t schedule in advance. Most of our days are spent with students in individual meetings, group meetings, lunch duty, and various other activities. We are here to help guide our students to have the best possible experience at McCullough.

PSAT 8/9 Test is October 12th

On Wednesday, October 12th, we will be administering the PSAT 8/9 to all 8th graders at McCullough. This is not a test that is required by the state and will not have any impact on their advancement to high school. The PSAT 8/9 is a good indicator of how students will perform on the SAT in high school and is what our district uses to predict college readiness. You can find information about the PSAT 8/9 here: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/psat-8-9

Lost and Found at McCullough

Our lost and found is located in the cafeteria for non-electronic items. At the end of each month, any items still remaining are donated to a charitable organization. An announcement reminding students to check the lost and found is made at the end of each month. We have already collected several water bottles, jackets, bags, and backpacks. We will attempt to return any item that has a name label on it.

Lost electronic items are turned into A102, the 7th grade office, for safe keeping.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXTRA HELP

Morning Tutoring

Students should check with their classroom teacher for tutorial location and availability per subject. Morning tutorials begin at 8:05 a.m.

Advisory Expectations and Procedures

Advisory is a time for students to study, read, receive tutoring, or practice in a fine arts setting.

Unless there is a special event, students will attend their assigned advisory on Mondays or the first day of the week if Monday is a holiday. The rest of the week depends on whether it is a Red Day or a Green Day.

On Red Days, students may be pulled from their regular advisory to work in a fine arts setting such as band, orchestra, choir, or art.

On Green Days students may be pulled from their regular advisory to receive extra help academically.

Students may sign up with their classroom teacher to receive extra help during advisory or their classroom teacher may request that they come to their classroom for extra help.

SPARKS Peer Tutoring During Advisory

Beginning October 13th, McCullough students will have the opportunity to seek help from a S.P.A.R.K. Peer Tutor on the first green day of the week (excluding Mondays) during advisory. S.P.A.R.K stands for Supportive Peers as Resources of Knowledge. They consist of carefully chosen 8th grade students who provide encouragement, motivation and support for other McCullough students who need assistance in completing homework assignments, studying for tests, learning basic study or organizational skills, and developing better time management skills. The program began over 10 years ago at McCullough and has returned after a brief hiatus during COVID. The sponsors, Jarrett Sutter and Donna Meyer, are thrilled to bring it back into existence and are dedicated to providing help to students who may otherwise not be able to get tutoring due to commitments before and after school.

PAWS After-School Tutoring Begins Tuesday, Sept. 6

What: An after-school study hall where students can have time specifically set aside to complete their homework or get help in different subjects. We will have McCullough teachers available to help.

Where: PAWS is held after school in the downstairs library.

When: Monday-Wednesday from 4:10-5:00 beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2022.

What should I bring? Come prepared with homework and any supplies you might need. Be sure you have enough to work on until 5:00. Students will not be dismissed early from PAWS and must remain in the library the entire time.

How do I get home? A parent or guardian must pick you up at 5:00 p.m. at the front of the building when PAWS is over. There is no late bus. All students from PAWS will leave together and go to the covered horseshoe at the front of the building to wait for their ride.
