The J-Hawk Experience!
Info you need to know for week of January 6 - 10!
Message from the principal
As we return from our winter break, I wanted to welcome everyone back from what I hope was a restful and enjoyable time. I hope that we enter the new decade and the year 2020 with a great vision and our sights set on an awesome new year! I want to provide information regarding a few important areas at UHS:
End of the 1st semester, I.E.S., and semester finals
As was the case last year, we will be finishing 1st semester at UHS after our winter break this year. Monday, January 6th, will be a Day 2. Students will have the same I.E.S. session on Monday and Tuesday this week that they had on Friday, December 20th. That session they are signed up for can be found when they login to FlexiSCHED or in their school email.
We will have one full week of classes this week and then one more day of regular class on Monday, January 13th (Day 2), before we start our semester finals. We find that it is important to schedule time for teachers to assess students learning in a summative fashion through semester final exams or projects on the last three days of the semester on January 14th, 15th, and 16th (see schedule below). There will be no school for students but a teacher workday on Friday, January 17th. Monday, January 20th, schools will not be open in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
Semester finals
Expectations:
- Students are required to be in attendance for ALL of their scheduled classes.
- PE classes will be a Day 1 (juniors and seniors) during finals days.
- Students are not required to come to Learning Centers during finals days.
- Students will remain in their testing areas/classrooms the entire testing period.
- All students must be in supervised areas of the building or must leave campus. Those supervised areas include the UHS Library Media Center or the lunchroom.
- Lunch will be available at UHS during each day of semester exams.

2nd semester schedules for 2019-20
We will not be making changes to 2nd semester schedules to add or change classes. Students who don't already have a daily Learning Center can drop a class for a Learning Center but need to fill out proper paperwork (with parent/guardian and school approval) through the UHS Counseling Office first.
Sincerely,
Tim Carver

Learning around UHS
UHS LMC's new STEAM service project!
For the month of December, the UHS LMC (library media center) is bringing back the loom knitting STEAM service project. Last year, the students collaboratively loom knitted 11 scarves, which were donated to Central Iowa Shelter & Services. We would like to continue this year by collaboratively loom knitting hats for those in need. Whenever possible, the LMC strives to teach students more than just the maker skill, but also its impact upon the wider world.
Thanks to Black Friday sales, we have enough yarn for many hats of various sizes. The hats will once again be donated to local homeless shelters to support those in our community most in need. Ms. Watson will host an IES session to allow interested students to participate, but the loom projects will be out until the hats are completed.
Thanks for supporting our students & community.
