Women in Psychology
Psychology is more than just Freud and Jung
When most people think about Psychology they think of men like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, but women have also made significant contributions to the science of Psychology. Here are just a few of the women we need to remember who contributed to the science of Psychology, both at it's beginning and now in modern day psychology. They all made significant contributions to the development of the science of Psychology.
Early Women Pioneers in Psychology
Christine Ladd-Franklin (1847-1930) Her major contribution was in the field of Color Vision. She was one of the first women inducted into the American Psychological Association.
Sabina Spielrein (1885-1942) was a patient then became a colleague of Carl Jung, She attended medical school and once she graduated she became one of the first women psychoanalysts. She interacted with both Freud and Jung as a fellow professional, and influenced the work of Melanie Klein.
Karen Horney (1885-1952) made significant contributions to Humanism, Self-Psychology, Psychoanalysis, and Feminine Psychology. She disagreed with Freud over his 'penis envy' theory and instead proposed that men have 'womb envy'.
20th Century Women In Psychology
Mary Ainsworth (1913-1999) worked in the field of Developmental Psychology, especially in the area of Attachment Theory. She is known for developing the Strange Situation Test that tested how attached an infant was to it's mother.
