Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 2/27 - 3/2
We Welcome the Month of March!
Fundations:
We are back to Fundations this week and continuing to work on Unit 10. We've become experts on vowel teams of _ai and -ay. We acted as "Word Detectives" and searched for --ai/-ay words in our text titled "Cursive Letters."
Literacy:
We love our study of dinosaurs this week! Our tradebook, Fossils Tell of Long Ago is teaching us about the stages of fossil formation. Also, we learned that ALL we know about dinosaurs comes from fossils! The Schoolwide Unit - Earth's Systems: Processes that Shape the Land is teaching us about earth's layers, how the surface of the earth can change and what causes it to change. We have a lot to learn in this unit!
Math:
This week, we brought back working on an open number line as a strategy to solve addition and subtraction problems. For our Real World Experience for Unit 4, we solved a math problem with one or two different strategies and then explained our thinking on a video posted to the app "Seesaw." Be sure to see your child's work for this math project on Seesaw.
Writing Workshop:
After another mini-lesson on the parts of a "friendly letter," each student wrote a letter to Ruby Bridges, a true American Hero. We thanked her for her bravery as a six year old student and let her know that our school is a memorial of her work because of our diversity and celebration of our differences. We also told her about our upcoming "Celebration of Differences Day" on March 21st. We hope she writes us back!
Dr. Seuss' Birthday, March 2nd:
On Thursday, March 2nd we celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday in Room 1. We watched a video about him, read a Scholastic News issue about his first book and how he never gave up when 27 publishers said "no" (persistence), and played several reading and math games with a Dr. Seuss theme. We also read many of his books. We enjoy his rhyme and playful way with words!
Our LAST "Star of the Week"...Noah Greene!
Miles did it! He passed through Multiplication 0-10!
Kevin used his "Teach for Turley"...he REALLY wants my job!
Good behavior brings fun prizes from the Treasure Drawer!
Recording each other for our Math Project.
Explaining our math thinking...go to Seesaw to see them!
Hooray for Ria! One of the Top 25 Readers in the Blackhawks Reading Program for January!
All our happy Blackhawks Readers for January!
Frankie shared his shark fossil with the class.
Fossils Tell of Long Ago...Four Stages in Fossil Formation
Stage One - An animal or plant dies...
and is quickly covered or buried by water or soil.
Stage 2 - Over millions of years...
rock layers build on top of one another.
Stage 3 - The hard parts of a plant or animal-bones, teeth, woody stems...
Stage 3-Part 2- harden into rock.
Now, they are fossils!
Stage 4 - The earth changes.
Stage 4-Part 2-rock layers get pushed up to the surface...
Now scientists and paleontologists can dig out the fossils.
Using body cues and movements really helped us remember the 4 Stages!
Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss!
Learning about empathy with Ms. Askeland. She read and discussed the book, "The Invisible Boy."
