Pride Month Presents Many Opportunities

LGBTQ Pride Month is celebrated annually in June to honor the Stonewall riots that occurred in 1969. In June 1969, supporters of New York City’s Stonewall Inn protested police harassment of the LGBTQ+ community. This unrest marked the beginning of a larger movement to raise awareness and outlaw discriminatory practices against members of the LGBTQ+ community (youth.gov). Today, the advocacy continues. Pride is celebrated in various ways, such as parades and community events. The most impactful way to celebrate Pride may be through education.

The Los Angeles Unified School District is a longtime advocate in ensuring for affirming schools and workplaces for our LGBTQ+ community. The LA Unified Human Relations Diversity and Equity (HRDE) is a department in the Division of Student Health and Human Services. HRDE is committed to fostering a safe and respectful District, school and community culture when the seeds of peace and justice are sown so that all students and staff can lead needs safe, purposeful and academically fruitful lives.

Equally important to education is providing support and acceptance. Research indicates that individuals who identify as LGBTQ+ face challenges related to stigma and discrimination. These challenges have been linked to high rates of mental health issues, including suicidality and substance abuse. Positive relationships and social connections are core to resilience for all individuals no matter how one identifies. Therefore, you are encouraged to take time to learn more about Pride month while practicing accepting behaviors to strengthen our community resilience. Please visit the Family Acceptance Project® website to learn more about the research and access downloadable/shareable materials that can be used at home, in schools, and in our communities.
