A Message from the Principal...
Dear friends,
This week finds me off campus Tuesday through Friday. My father had a stroke this September and was recently released to recover at home. While my dad is 81, he is a strong-willed, mentally sharp and vibrant former Marine. He has been left paralyzed on the right side and unable to care for himself. As you can imagine this has been a very humbling experience for him (and our family). Those of you who have had to care for a sick family member know I always say, "family first". While I hate to miss work, it's time I take my own advice.
I hope you all have a wonderful week and I look forward to enjoying all the festivities of the following week with you.
Sincerely,

Speak Up Survey- Your voice is needed
Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning
The Speak Up Project for Digital Learning, facilitated by Project Tomorrow®, gives education stakeholders the opportunity to share their viewpoints about key educational issues, particularly concerning digital learning and the use of technology to support future ready schools. By participating today, you are ensuring your voice is heard not only by your school and district but at the state and national level as findings are summarized and shared with national and state policy makers every year. Speak Up is both a national research project and a free service to all schools and districts. Poway Unified is participating in the survey this year and is asking teachers and staff to participate.

CHARACTER COUNTS
Thank you to those of you who have nominated students for Character Counts awards. We had a great time delivering these awards prior to the break and the students who received them certainly appreciated the recognition. The Character Counts awards are a way for students to be recognized by staff for showing fairness, responsibility, trustworthiness, citizenship, respect and caring. Nominations will be picked up from the workroom at the end of every month. New slips will be placed in your mailbox and there are always extra forms in the workroom. If you have any questions please contact Matti at mamiller@powayusd.com.

Book of the Month: City of Ember written by Jeanne DuPrau
Summary: Many hundreds of years ago, the city of Ember was created by the Builders to contain everything needed for human survival. It worked…but now the storerooms are almost out of food, crops are blighted, corruption is spreading through the city and worst of all—the lights are failing. Soon Ember could be engulfed by darkness…
But when two children, Lina and Doon, discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone? Will the people of Ember listen to them? " (goodreads).
