5th Grade Veterans Day Performance
See the permission form below from the music teachers.
Dear Fifth Grade Parents,
We are pleased to announce that the French Elementary Veterans Day Program will be presented by our wonderful Fifth graders! Performances will be held Thursday, November 14th at 7:00 pm for parents and families and for the student body that morning. Our program will feather the entire fifth grade class with songs to honor our Veterans and will highlight each class with movement, instruments and speaking parts. In order for the show to be a success, we would be thrilled if all students could attend the evening performance.
Fifth grade students should plan to wear any combination of patriotic red, white and blue (no shorts please). Girls may wear dresses in patriotic colors if desired. Shoes should be comfortable and appropriate for standing and moving. This will be the dress for all performances.
Please return the bottom portion of this letter by Wednesday, October 2. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s music teacher.
Sincerely,
Jill Massa Shelly Gunhouse

Volunteer Background Check
For the safety of our students, a background check must be done every year to volunteer.
Please go to:
https://www.kleinisd.net/cms/one.aspx?pageId=1995880
Once it comes back approved follow the information provided. You will log into CERVIS and update all your information and select “French” as your group and all the activities you are interested in helping with.
Dads, uncles, grandpas and older brothers can sign up to help with the ”Pit Crew”.
If you have any trouble, contact, Jennifer Houston @ Jennwith31@gmail.com, French Volunteer Coordinator
I want to volunteer! What are my options?
Pit Crew—Provides positive male role models for students and an extra set of eyes and ears to enhance school security. Pit Crew also assists with carline and other teacher and student needs throughout the year.
Hospitality—Assist with teacher luncheons and appreciation events. This includes helping with the decorations, bringing up food items, set-up and serving and tear down.
Subject Support—willing to provide support in specific subjects, can be one on one or small groups.
General Volunteers—Help with anytime that is needed throughout the year.
Library Helpers and Book Fair—Assist the librarian with shelving books. Assist with various book fairs and crafts, called maker spaces.
Room Parents—Help in your student’s classroom and be the “go to” parent for parties and if specific help is needed.
Special Events—Assist in coordinating, planning and organizing fun school wide “family events” during the school year.
Helping Hands—Assist with teacher projects, such as cutting, stapling and sorting.
Community Service—Assist with various community service events that will occur throughout the year. This may include a book drive, food drive and other community service projects.
Hearing and Vision—Help students line up for this and stay quiet as they wait their turn.
Fundraisers—Help prep and plan for a successful Color Run!
Pictures Days—Help students line up and wait quietly for their turn and help fix hair if out of place.
5th grade appreciation—help prep and plan for the end of year 5th grade party and ceremony.
Music Appreciation—This is a puppet show that the district provides to the younger students to introduce different instrument families to the students. You would be a voice of a puppet and follow a script.
Art Appreciation—The District provides artwork and you would lead a small group of students through a scavenger hunt to look at all the pieces in the “mini museum”.
Reading Helpers—Help the K and 1st graders with letters, site words and reading practice with you one on one.

The French Racer Pit Crew FAQ
What is The Pit Crew?
It is a French Elementary family and community engagement educational initiative.
What are the goals of The Pit Crew program?
1) To provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important.
2) To provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
What are the responsibilities of a Pit Crew Member?
Pit Crew members are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year on the French Elementary campus. Fathers and others initially sign up to volunteer during Open House and through a ‘Launch Event’ such as a “Dads and Kids Pizza Night” or “Donuts with Dad” or by calling their child’s school any time throughout the school year.
Who oversees the program?
The program is overseen by the elementary school counselor who partners with school administrators and the PTO to coordinate scheduling and identify opportunities for Pit Crew members to assist at our school. Dads and volunteers perform a variety of tasks during their volunteer day.
What does a Pit Crew volunteer do (while they are at school)?
During the day, they may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. On the day of your participation, you will check in at the front office, be greeted and receive an agenda for the day. It’s that easy!
Do I need to volunteer for the whole day or event?
Although we would like to bring fathers and father figures to school for the whole day, you can sign up for a half day. Your name will also be placed on a call list so we can call you for special events such as field day, open house, grade level showcases, and more.
Can I volunteer for more than one day? Absolutely! We hope you will have an incredible experience and want to come back again.
Dates to Remember
We work diligently to keep our community up to date on what's coming up. Please check back regularly in case events are cancelled, or dates change. Thank you!

Car Line Reminders
Students with last names beginning with L through Z are picked up at the back porch. Please be mindful that we load six cars at one time. Keeping your carpool tag visible helps us load cars more quickly. Once all six are loaded, you will be motioned to move forward. Please do not pull out and around the line. Thank you for your cooperation. If you are late. . . Your student(s) will be waiting for you in the front office. You must sign them out with the front desk.
Thank you for your cooperation and help, as we work to keep all of our Racers safe.

Additional Safety Reminders
Bike Safety
- Rules of the Road. All bicycle riders should follow the basic rules of the road, which also apply to skateboards, scooters and other non-motorized vehicles:
- Ride on the right, in the same direction as traffic using bike lanes when available.
- Stop and look both ways before entering the street.
- Stop at all intersections, whether marked or unmarked.
- Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
- Before turning, use hand signals and look in every direction.
- Use Your Head. Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride.
- Walk your bike to the crossing guard and do not go too fast.
Walker Safety
· Walk on the right of the sidewalk. You are sharing the narrow sidewalk with bikers.
· Make eye contact with the driver before crossing and look both ways.
· Do not use the phone or text when walking, it makes you less aware of traffic and bikers around you.
Absence Reporting & Electronic Gradebook: Skyward is a Wonder!
Good attendance is of prime importance for the educational development of each student. A student should not be absent unless it is absolutely necessary. It is mandatory that written notes be submitted to the Attendance Office within 5 (five) school days of the absence. If the Attendance Office does not receive documentation from the parent or a physician’s office by hand delivery, online, or fax within 5 (five) school days of the absence, the absence will remain unexcused.
We are no longer able to accept emails about student absences. All Klein ISD campuses will accept digital parent notification of absence online through Skyward. To report an absence, please go to Skyward Family Access. When you log in through Skyward, click on "Attendance" and click on "Absence Request" at the top right of the screen. A small dialogue box will appear showing request history. In order to add an absence, click "Add Request". A new dialogue box will open where information about the absence can be entered. The calendar will let you choose the dates in the past/future. A comment box also allows you to describe the nature of the absence. All fields are required. Once you click "Save" the entry is then sent to the attendance office for review and approval. You will be able to check the status of the request to see the outcome. Click HERE for a brief handout on how to report an absence. For more helpful tips on using Skyward, please click here: https://kleinisd.net/cms/one.aspx?pageId=1973215
