DR FINCH VISITS LEGEND SPRINGS!

Dr Finch loves visiting school campuses. This week he popped into our Battle of the Books meeting! He also learned all about our Penny War Fundraiser as students shared why we are raising money. We are proud to raise funds for a local veteran non-profit, Soldiers Best Friend, with a goal of sponsoring at least one veteran and their dog training sessions.

IF YOU PICK UP OR DROP OFF IN THE MAIN LOOP (GREEN CURB BLUE CURB), PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO to help the procedure run more smoothly. Click here to watch the video.

Drop Off & Pick Up Reminders

  • Please be patient and be kind to staff and other drivers as it takes a few weeks for all to learn our procedures. Remember out staff is out in 100+ degree weather keeping all our kids safe, and everyone's safety is more important than any individual's convenience
  • Make sure that all adults who will be picking up students at 3:30 have a yellow name placard with the student's FIRST & LAST NAME clearly written in marker bold and big so we can read them. Placards are available in the office. Take as many copies as you need (one for mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, etc......).

  • Our Pick-Up Loop opens at 3:30 pm. Waiting in line earlier causes back-up and congestion, as students are not dismissed before 3:30PM from this gate.

  • Please pull forward and follow all staff directions around the pick up loop. Do not stop short or get out of your car.

  • We do not have any supervision of students until 8:30 am so please do not drop off or leave any kids unattended before 8:30 am.

  • Do not cross any streets outside of the designated and manned crosswalks in the AM or PM. We have had some very close calls and pedestrians almost struck crossing 62nd or Quail illegally.

Note- Glendale PD has been making a presence to ticket any drivers who are speeding in a school zone (15 MPH limit) or parking illegally. Be sure you are reading the "no stopping, standing, parking" signs and adhering to them around the neighborhood.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL REMINDERS

As a reminder, gates open at 8:30AM. School starts promptly at 8:45AM.

Also-- no students will be released after 3:15PM from the office. If you arrive to pick up your child early to avoid traffic lines you will have to wait until the Kinder release (3:20) or 1st-6th release (3:30) to get your child. This minimizes classroom disruptions and ensures students are completing their full day of learning.

WHAT HAPPENS ON EARLY RELEASE FRIDAYS?

Early Release Friday

The majority of our Fridays are 2:00PM release days in DVUSD. These days are reserved for our campus Professional Learning Communities and Staff Development for our DVUSD staff. These 90-minute early release days offer teachers and staff the time for collaboration and planning throughout the district in order to enhance the education offered district-wide and offer the best learning experience for our students. These early release Fridays will occur most Fridays, with some exceptions. View the instructional calendar for more information. Visit the start and dismiss page to find out when your child’s school releases during those dates.

How is LS supporting a Standards-Based Mindset?

Our school is aligned to the DVUSD Standards-based mindset, which helps guide our staff in tracking and reporting academic performance related to the Arizona College and Career Ready Standards.

Students are expected to complete daily practice assignments/homework to reinforce skills and concepts learned in class. In-process learning assignments will be factored into a student’s final grade, but will only count for 1% of the entire grade. Daily assignments are essential in developing the skills and knowledge in order to excel on the summative assessments. Assessments will be 99% of a student’s final grade. There will be no opportunities for extra credit. Grades take into consideration mastery of standards and skill development. All grades are supported by appropriate documentation (e.g., anecdotal notes, work samples, checklists, portfolios, rubrics, projects, tests, performance assessments, etc.). The grade a student receives on any assignment will reflect an accurate assessment of the student’s performance on the assessment. No individual test, performance assessment, assignment, or project should be more than 25% of the total grade.

It is absolutely imperative that students keep up with classwork, daily assignments and discussions in order to fully comprehend and grasp the material. These in-process learning assignments directly impact student performance on assessments. A standards-based mindset also embraces allowing students opportunities to show learning through reassessment when appropriate.

We will continue to provide updates and clarification throughout the year regarding these best-practices for grading and reporting on student learning. We are proud of the work our students, staff, and administration are doing to align definitions of mastery and essential standards across our district, leading the state in proficiency and growth for all students in DVUSD.
