SMS Trojan News
Principal's Corner
October 7th - 11th
As we enter into Week 6 of the school year, we're hitting our rhythm. Grades are in the computer, challenges have already likely come, and the "newness" of school has faded! I'm very excited this week that we are able to hear Nathan Harmon speak and encourage us at an assembly on Thursday. He will be addressing "The Five" and how it applies to us at South Middle: Being transparent, being accountable for our actions, working hard, understanding that we have the power to make good choices, and above all - valuing people. The values he speaks on this week directly coincide with our Trojan PRIDE (Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence). It should be a great time. Swing by - and make sure you check in at the front office - on Thursday for our 8:45 a.m. assembly.
Our first 6-week SMART Goal is nearly completed. We have a ton of students and families making the commitment to show up every day. We'll have some reflection time on our first goal this next week and jump into our second goal of the year to help guide us as a community.
Kudos to the 6th graders for winning our Fall Fundraiser. In the next few weeks, they will be treated to shave ice from a local community partner for their efforts. Thank you to everyone for committing to raise funds for our school. These funds go directly to students and making South a better place.
This week, I am so excited to get going with our Chess for Success club. Chess for Success is open to all and absolutely free. Our goal is that each and every student will be plugged into something at some point this year: participating in athletics, being a part of a club, or volunteering with a community organization. Chess Club will be every Tuesday & Thursday from 3:15 - 4:30 p.m. in the Library. Again - it's absolute free! And you get a free t-shirt...
I want to invite all of our families to a Student Success Act - Community Forum this Thursday evening at the GPHS Library from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. School districts around the state will be given state funds on top of our general budget monies to put specifically into certain areas for school improvement. The main piece, however, is that our community here in Grants Pass gets to have input and decide how those funds are utilized. Please come and decide how we will get to spend our allocated funds!
And please remember: No school on Friday. Please work hard the four days that we do have school this week, and take a break this upcoming weekend!
Grateful,
Mr. Sale
